in jail and his clerk L. B. Taggart was
fined four thousand and sentenced to
three months on a previous sentence.
The Court overruled the motion for a new
trial.
Judge McPherson. while delivering the
sentence reviewed each case in detail and
dwelt particularly upon the manner in
which the rebates had been paid in cur
rency, by messenger or in a plain envelope.
He said that the firms had not entered
: the transactions on the books and that all
. concerned are as guilty as the secretary
who performed the celiterate

convicted of the murder of Mrs. Bessie
Hollisier on January 1 2. of this year
was executed oy hanging in the county
jail this noon. The crime for which Ivens
was executed was one of the most at
trocious attacks upon women in the police
history of Chicago. On the evening of
January 12 Ivens was standing at Belden
Avenue an alley near Lincoln Avenue
when Mrs. Hollister came by. He acc
osted her, pursued her half way across
Burligg street muffled her out cries by
holding his hand over tier mouth and
nose and dragged her into a dark corner
at the rear of his father's carpenter shop
There he fiendishly assaulted her and
murdeied her by twisting a copper wire
around her throat. The body was found
the next morning half hidden under a
pile of rubbish in the lot.

Boston, Mass, June 22 The quarterly
dividend recently declared by the direct
ors of the Calumet and Hecla Mining
Company it payable today. It amounts
to $15 per there to all stockholders on

Stockton, June 22 Mrs. Mary Head,
mother of Mrs. Emma LeDoux is very ill
in her room at the Budd House and will
probably not survive if her daughter is
convicted of murder. The district attor
ney will commence his closing arguments
in the case this afternoon and the jury
will retire by tomorrow noon.

its first annual convention at St. Luma
Park this afternoon and evening questions
of particular interest to babies will be
discussed. Babies reared in incubators
throughout the state will be on exhibition
and delegates from all pasts of Ohio wilt
discuss the nurs;ng of infants the use of
soothing syrup; the teething period; the
bottle, it uses and abuses, safety pins,

stone of the secondary Industrial School
building in this city will be laid this after
noon with appropriate ceremonies. An
interesting program for the ceremony hat
been prepared. The Hon.G. Gunby Jordan,
President of the Board of School Trustees
will deliver the address of welcome,- to
which Governor J. M. Terrell of Georgia
will respond. Dr. James E. Russell, dean
of the Teachers College. Columbia Uni
versity, New York, will deliver an ad

complaints that have been filed with the
insurance commissioner. A movement

bills were paid with an Oregon Water
Power Co., check as superintendent of

Sellwood precinct was one of the few
precincts in this county that voted on local
option. In this precinct is situated the
famous resort known as the Oaks, which
is owned by the Oregon Water Power Co.
and also the Mt. Hood Brewery, had this
precinct gone dry, both the resort and
brewery would have lost thousands of
