Phone 151 1. Thorns' grocery Geo. W. Powell, BELATED SYMPATHY The big packers, composing what i called the beef trust, now express a lively concern for the interests of the farmers and stock raisers. They declare in mov ing tones that the disclosures of the Neil Reynolds report strike a blow at every farmer or tockman who raises a hog or a sheep or a steer for the market. There by they hope to interest the clats they buy their supplies from agains the agitation for regulation of their busi ness. Heretofore the public has been led to suppose that farmers and stock raisers had a just and particular grievance against the packing combine. In fact they said so themselves, and there were grievous complaints of the methods of the trusts. The grievance was that members of the combine, by an agreement among them selves in the purchase of livestock, were able practically to set their own price. They forced prices down at the purchas ing end of their business, and forced them up at the selling end. So farmers and stockman complained of the low prices paid for beef on the hoof, while consumers complained of the high prices charged for dressed meat. The trust's system was fixed, like the darkey's coon trap, to "cotch 'em a corn in' and goin'."
