CAUSE OE FLOODS
General Ma ager J. P. O'Brien, of the
u. K. & N. system, who was in the city
last week during the high water, struck
keynote of the flood situation m
Eastern Oregon in a conversation in this
city.
He said that the denudation of the
mountain along the sources of the streams
would increase the danger from floods
every year, as there was no timber left
to hold the snow, or to catch the rain and
cause it to soak into the ground. East

ELGIN HERE NEXT SUNDAY.
There will be something doing on the
local diamond next Sunday, when the home
team and the Elgin team cross bats.
That the town from the lower end of the
valley has an exceptionally strong aggre
gation of players is a fact beyond dispute,
and reports from there, are to the ef
fect that they will come with every ex
pectation of winning in a walk.
These teams have met tvice this sea
son, La Grande taking the first game by
the score of 5 to 2, Elgin winning the last
time 6 to 8. However since their defeat,
the La Grande boys have been working
hard and feel determined to give their
opponents a good, sound drubbing. Man
ager Heisner promisee to present to loc
al "fans" the fastest bunch of balltossers
they have seen for many days.
Watch for the lineup in Saturday's
issue, as it may prove interesting to you,
A special train will arrive from Elgin at
11 A.M. The game will be called at 2:30,
instead of 8 o'clock as heretofore.
FOR FAMILY USE
Every family in town should have a
box of soap from our window this week
at 20 cts. Come in or telephone us.

ADJUSTING LOSES
(Scrlpps News Association)
San Francisco, June 6 After several

ving six or more companies. Two loses
were partially adjusted and Secretary
