Every one should work for a bigger, better and busier La Grande. A careful examination of the list of the Union signers to the petition which brought out Mr. Holmes will reveal the fact that Mr. Holmes has the assistance of Union Republicans as well as Demo crats. So far as his managers are con cerned they have only one idea in view. That is the election of a man who they know to be in favor of county division. They are certain that in case Mr. Holmes is elected to a seat in the next Oregon legislature that Union will have a Repre sentative who will make it his business to fight for county division from the first to the last. It is useless for him to denv this as it is a well known fact that Mr. Holmes has made the statement that the only reason that he allowed his name to be used was that he was anxious to do what ha could to divide the county. If it is not his desire to cut the county in two why should he receive the sunnort nf Republicans and Democrats alike in Union? It is useless for him to attempt to pose as an anti-divissionist when it i a well known fact that he is a creature of division and was brought out for no other reason. The voters of this county can not be hoodwinked by any denial of his or his supporters. The wealth of Grande "Ronde valley is much greater this morning than before the rain. We are now absolutely assursd a bumper crop. Not many days distant from the election. Republicans are expected to get out and work. When the smoke of battle has cleared away the greatest Republican majority aver seen in this county should appear to view,'. The voters of Union and Wallowa counties should not lose sight of the fact that F, S. Ivanhoe is in everyway quali fied to fill the office of District Attorney. He has had many years law experience in both, counties and ia a man in svery way able to administer the office in a satis factory mannsf) Not few voters in the county are of the opinion that Union county has done about enough for the Oliver family. The records show that warrants have been drawn in their favor to the grand tota of $46,000 and their service has covered a period of nearly twenty years. This $46,000 Is not all by any means as a portion of this time, the fee system was the law, and those who ought to be in a position to know, say that $26,000 could easily be ' added to the above mcuoL Foreign' gifts are being accepted for San Francisco, after all. President Roosevelt's announcement that the United States could not accept contributions from foreign countries has heen followed by acceptance of soma of the proffered gifts by the city of San Francisco itself and Secretary of War Tart, as president of the American Red Cross, has accepted others, including a generous gift from Japan, Many people still have to be fed in the streets at San Francisco by the relief organizations. . Plans for rebuilding go rapidly on. Steel and reinforced con crete are in favor for building material.
