DISCOVERED
Last summer W. L. Jewell, who has a
rinch across the Clearwater river from
Kamiah. made an unusual discovery,
which has created much interest in the
community, states a Kamiah correspon
dent of the Lewiston Tribune. At the
foot of a bluff of lava formation he start
ed to dig for water and at a depth.- of
two feet encountered hard frozen ground.
This astonisned him, for it was in- July
and the thermometer registerei .90 de
gree in the shade, and the spot i expos
ed to the direct rays of the sun all day.
Mr. Jawell continued the ho! down
about six feet and had to give up the job
on accountof the hardness of the frozen
stuff. ..- .
Tli ice seems to be of unusual coldness

ordinary ice., In crevice i found char,
pur ice. and last July Mr. .Jewell dug out
about 20 pounds, put it into a ack, and
carried it to Kamian. AlthoughJJt was
a very hot day the ice had not vet begun
to melt upon his arrival but had frozen to
the sack instead.
