Wedding anniversary
Mr. and Mrs.'J. Whitby wera pleasantly
surprised by a large number of frienc's
Monday evening it being the anniversary
of their wedding day. The parties took
their stand in, front of the house unnoticed
and began to serenade, but were soon
bidden into the house where Mrs. Whitby
was crowned with a bridal wreath and
Mr. Whitby presented with an appropri
ate . buttot-hole bouquet After some
time had elapsed in talking of "ups and
downs" in matrimonal life and playing
games, all were ushered into the dining
room where the Ladies of the Ninth
Street Neighborhood Club had spread
their famous luncheon of v. hich all p r
took heartily. At the proper time Mrs.
Camp stood up and in her able manner

Announcement was made yesterday
that W. C. Brown had been promoted to
the first vice presidency of: the New York
Central at a salary of $?5,0Q0 per annum.
This is probably one of the highest active
railway positions . in the United States.
Mr. Brown has been identified with the
New York Central for many years, but is
well known in Iowa, having formerly
been identified with the Illinois Central at
Waterloo. He started his railway cireer
about thirty-five years agj as a mjssen
ger boy. Mr. Brown has a Jarge finan
cial interest in this countv and is nreei-
dant of the Eastern Oregon Trust and
Savings Bank of this city.
