The ladies of the Five Hundred club
were delightfully entertained yesterday
afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harry
Grady. The prize, a dainty cup and
saucer, was won by Mrs. W. H. Bohnen
kamp. The guests were:
Mesdames Causey, Van Buren, Kiddle.
Allison, Aikine, Bartlett Gulling, Eric
son, Bohnenkamp, and Cavana.
Miss Margaret Newlin entertained the

Mrs. E. B, Hays is in receipt of a
letter from her parents of Sevastopool
California near Santa Rosa, that while
their house was moved two inches off
its foundations and threw all the dishes
onto the floor,' no members of the family
were injured.
The many friends of Evangelist Coombs
who assisted in meetings here last year
will be pleased to learn that he and his
family were unhurt in the earthquake.
He writes that all of the 555 members
of his congregation In San Jose escaped
injury though their building was destroy
ed. S.M.Hill, who ten years ago was a
resident of this county, is visiting in the
Cove for. a few days, on his return from
the East, to his home in Washington. He
was pleased with the advancement of
Union County during his absence. - Ten
years certainly has made many changes
for the better in Unicn County.

SMiTH HARVEY At the home of the
brides parents near Union, Mr. Hilam
D. Smith and Miss Caddie Harvey, were
united in marriage at noon yester
day April 26. 1906. Rev. E. B. Hays
of the First Presbyterian church of La
Grande officiating.
A number of friends and' relatives
were present at the ceremony. After
the wedding ceremony, dinner was served
and after receiving congratulations the
young couple left for La Grande where
they will be at home to their many friends,

Athens April 27 Archie . Hahn, the
crack University of Michigan Sprinter,
but travelling under Milwaukee colors,
is now the chamDion 1 00 meter enrintar
of the world, having won that ev-nt here
today. He covered the distance in
11:1-6 seconds, barely beating his own
team mate, F. Moulton of Kansas City.
The 100 meter expressed in yards
represents 109.3 yards, and the reg
ulation American hundred vardt. would
have been covered, at his clip, in a trifle
more than ten seconds. The Americans
are winni'nsr the highest honor in the
dashes, as no other team seems to have
a ceance to get in the finals as so many
Americans are entered, and In nearly
all are winning the respective trial
heats. This makes the fourth first that
the American team has landed here since
the games began.'
The Olympian games at Athens are in
full blast and Americans are winning
everything in sight Archie Hahn of
Milwaukee won his 1 00 meter simi-final
race, in 1 1 :2-5, Moulton, winning his
race, and Eaton winning the third heat.
The finals will be run today and it is ex
pected Hahn will win handily. In the
middle distances' James Lightbody of
Chicago university captured the 800
meter, and Daniels won the final race
in the 100 meter swimming event R. C.
Awrey of New York won the standing
broad jump. Up till today Americans
have won three first and one third, with
Hahn, Lightbody Moulton and Eaton with
a place in the final races of their events.
The English entries are winning most of
the distance runs while the weights, ashes
and middle distances will no doubt go to
Americans.
