Attorney General Hadley, who was the guest of honor, diagnosed the existing abuses which command the attention of the country, such as the brib ery of legislatures and railroad abates, by declaring that corporations which override the law are in (very case behind the bosses and are responsible for corrupt politics. To his mind the vital problem is whether these great commercial enter prises of trusts can continue in open de fiance and violation of the law of the nation and the state. He says it is a conservative statement to say that the greater part of our trade and commerce is owned by corporations which are un lawful in their business methods. He does not believe that socialism or govern ment ownership offers a remedy, but but he believes that our industrial system "cannot continue to exist half lawful and half unlawful." - He thinks the people will stop the unlawful practices without any radical dopartur from beaten paths; that it will be accomplished by aroused public sentiment and conscience which will require that men who would be re garded as respectable must be honest, and that officers of the law should prose cute the offenders until the rights of the poor shall receive the same protection as the property of the rich. ON WRON END When the primaries are over we trust that some of our Republican exchanges will contain something more than paid matter relating to aspirants for office. Roseburg Review (Dem.) - Cardinal Gibbons voices the honest public estimate of the press when he says: "The dread of exposure in the public press keeps many a man sticking close to the path of recitude who otherwise would stray off into the byways of graft" A London doctor declares that the night air is free from microbes and bene ficial to those who breathe it. This may be what keeps so many husbands out ate o' nights. . THf HAPPIEST HEART Who drives the horses of the sun Shall lord it but a day; Better the lowly deed were done And keep the humble way. The rust will find the sword of fame. The dust will hide the crown; Aye, none shall nail so high his name Time will not tear it down. The happiest heart that ever beat Was in some quiet breast That found the common daylight sweet And left to Heaven the rest John Vance Cheney. . A DEGENERATE SON E. O. Anderson, who resides . on a homestead north of Wallowa, made this office a very pleasant call on Saturday of last week, and informed us that W. W. Palmer, who had been absent eleven years, had been located in northeastern Washington. During his entire absence Mr. Palmer had sent no word home of his whereabouts, but was accidently located by his relatives . through the medium of 4 newspaper.
