chete, which was an implement, of the
Spanish troops in Cuba and the Philip
pines, appears destined to be adopted
more generally by our own troops.
Some five thousand of tbasa huga knives
have been issued to the troops in the
Philippines, by whom they are to be used
in cutting paths throjgh the thick under
brush, rather than as weapons. They

city, and it has now been decided, on tie
recommendation of the General Staff rf
the Army to extend the machete to field
artillery troops at home and add that
implement to the Individual equipment of
of the light artillerymen in the field.

An ordinance establishing the street
and side-walk grades of Second Street in
the City of La Grande, Oregon, from
points named herein.
The city of La Grande does ordain as
follows:
Section 1. The street and side-walk
grades are hereby established a follows,
upon Second Street in the c ty of La
Grande. Oregon, towit:
Commencing . at the intersection of
Second Street and 1 Streets, said city, at
an elevation of 42.60 feet above the
present established base for fixing the
grades of tne streets of said city, thence
soutn along the center of Second Street
to the cenUr of H Street 47 feet above
the base, thence soutn to the center of G
Street bi teet above said base; thence
south to the center of F Street 61.74
feet above the said base; thence south to
D Street 73.92 feet above said base;
thence south to C Street at an elevation
of 85 feet above said base.
Section 2. The grade of the side-walks
shall be upon said Second Street, between
the points mentioned herein, and are
hereby established at the same elevation
below said grades, as upon other streets
of the city heretofore established by or
dinance.
Section S. This ordinance shall be in
full force and effect from and after the

Passed by the council on the 4th day of
April 1906, by 8 councilman voting
therefore and no councilman voting against
its passage.

' Be it resolved, chat a new sidewalk
shall be constructed on the west side of
Fourth street from the south side of K
street to the north side of I street, in the
city of La Grande, Oregon, and that said
sidewalks shall be constructed in accord
ance with the established grade and shall
be seven feet in width, and shall be con
structed in accordance with the ordinance
governing the construction of sidewalks
in the eiiy of L& Grande.
And be it further resolved, that the
sidewalks already, constructed on the
west side of Fourth street from the south
side of J street to the north side of C
street, in the said city of La Grande, shall
be placed in good repair, and the con
struction of the new sidewalks or repairs
of the sidewalks . already constructed,
shall be don at the expense of the abutt
ing property owners, and that said side
walks be constructed or said repairs
made by the 20 day of April, 1 906.

Grande, Oregon, on the 4th day of April,
