ROAD FOR PORTLAND MURDERED (Scrlpps Newt Association) Portland, April 6 At one thirty this afternoon fir was discovered in the Chamber of Commerce building, and be fore the flames could be brought unde -control the seventh and eighth stories were completely gutted. The Are de partment did heroic work but for a time it appeared as if the intira building would burn. At three fifteen the firemen had secured the upper hand and the great building was reported safe. The lower floors are badly damaged by smoke and water, but the walls are Intack and can be reconstructed, but the two upper ones are completely wrecked. Homer H. Halleck was killed dropping out of a top story window. He was formerly agent of the O.R.& N, at Baker City. For a time it was thought that the fire would spread to adjoining buildings, and the operators in the Western Union tele graph building were preparing to move. The heat was almost unbearable, but at three fifteen when it was announced that the fire was under control, they decided to remain. The financial loss is not obtainable, neither is the cause of the fire known at this time. Love, of St, Louis and one af the best known physicians tn the country, very wealthy, jumped from a hotel window this morning and died later of her injuries, after a night of unconven tional revelry with a male companion who ' was arrested for intoxication and' later released. The girl through her Bohemian ways forced the family to leave St. Louis. Tha other members of the family are in the best circles. Her father died aboard steamer recently, . going to England, Dalphins went on the stage and became well known in Bohemian circles,' AdA (Scrlpps News Association) Portland, April 6. Contracts were let today for two sections of the Wallula Pacific railroad. This road runs parallel with Hill's new line down the north bank of the Columbia to Portland. The con tract was awarded to Giebisch & Joplin. Work is to be commenced next week. It is believed that the Columbia will be briged at Troutdale. The Blue Mountain Hotel is receiving a new coat of paint. The semi-annual conference of the Mormon church opened today in the big tabernacle. The largest attendance in years is present especially from outside points. The main interest of the conference centers about the election of an apostle to fill the va cancy of Merrill, deceased. Rumor ha it that opposition will be brought forward because it Is alleged that tha apostles have taken wives since the manifesto.
