Apostle Dowie would certainly have been a success at the head of some large insurance company, as conducted prior to the recent investigations. It ii wonder that he was overlooked. The belief is becoming general through out the state that the women's suffrage amendment will carry this time. The women io Portland are making a strenu ous campaign and are greatly encouraged The people of this city sometimes are heard to condemn our high rate of tax ation. What would they do if they lived in Baker City where they pay 69, against our 44,, over one half as much more? union county will certainly be the garden spot of the west this year. Other sections of the state have been more or less injured by frosts and floods but the Grande Ronde valley remains unharmed and there is every prospect of a boun teous harvest and prosperous market. The criticism of the press while rather severe on the United States Senate has had the effect of bringing that body to a realization of the fact that they represent the people as well as the cirporations, rot a lew nowever owe their positions entirely to the latter but the majority are beginning to realize that the people have something to say as to who will represent them in their upper house of congress. sojournment is a subject of growing speculation. Many senators believe that j . . . . . May 10th. will be the extreme date, while others apprehend a prolonged session. On the House side the majority sentiment seems to incline toward an adjournment not earlier than June 1 This wilt be shortened if possible, as all are eager to get away, especially those with elections on their hands. But the Senate is not concurring in some of the bitterest compromises achieved in the House, and the big appropriations are yet io be argued. If the rate bill is put through the Senate soon, adjournment may be taken by May 10, but if the Senate argues on all proposed amend ments as it is on the preliminaries of the bill, May 10 will not be possible. I- LM Improves the flavor and adds to thehealth fulness of the food Mayor Stoddard has caused the finan cial condition of this city to be more closely studied than for several years. Some contend that with a revenue of more to show for our money. During the past two .years if must be remembered that this city has been called upon to de fray many expenses connected with the county seat campaign, and cost of mov ing the county offices paying interest on city hall bonds, and the installment of a heating plant, cement cross walks, the establishing of city grades, the ex tension of about five miles of water mains and a considerable increase in salaries. This year we will not be called upon to mee a similar expense in many of the items mentioned above and while the revenue received will approximately be the same as last year, it looks like the floating debt should be considerably reduced.
