La (3 ramie, Oregon - DYHAMlTf AT WALLACE j Spokane, March 17. Following the attempt three weeks ago to blow up the Standard mill near Wallace, a bomb con taining over 50 pounds of dynamite was found this morning on the ice on the south fork of the Coeur d' Alene river back of the fire station and in the very heart of Wallace. . . The finding of the infernal machine which contained enough of the explosive to sjnd hundreds of people to their deaths set Wallace wild with excitement. The bomb was discovered by William Schullenberg, a member of the fire de partment, while he was clearing away the ice In the street behind the fire sta tion to allow the refuse to be carried away. Schullenberg dealt the bomb five blows with his pick before he discovered what it was. The dynamite failed to explode because it was frozen, to which fact Schullenberg owes his life: I XFORD PAR myt IEJ FARQUHARSON. Hill, PrescriptionDrugXti WORTH READING In Cuba sixteen tons of cane yield one ton of sugar; in Peru it requires only twelve and one-half. In some parts of Spain silver money 250 years old is still in circulation. The first book printed in the English language was "A History of Troy,"jrint ed in Europe in 1474. There' are more wrecks in the Baltic Sea than in any other place in the world. The average is one wreck a day. Berlin local trains now have special compartments for "passengers with dogs." It is stated that out of 200,000,000 people in Africa only 2,00,000 have ever heard the Gospel. A prize of $2,000 has been offered by the Italian government for the plan of a dwelling best suited to the climatic condi rions of Italy. The largest oilship in the world, , the Naragansett, has just been launched in the Clyde; She will hold 10,000 tons of oil, which can be discharged at the rate of 900 tons an hour. The lion is worth to the animal dealer $1,600; the lioness $500; the leopard $300; the panther $250; bears $50 to $600; elk $200: the camel $300, and the elephant $500. The most crowded spot on the globe at certain hours of the day is the neighbor hood of the City Hall Park in New York. The Brooklyn bridge ends there, as well as one of the elevated roads, the subway now in construction, other projected sub ways, and many lines of street care. A razor is a saw, not a knife, and it works like a saw, not like a knife. Under the microscope its edge is seen to have innumerable and fine saw teeth. When these teeth get clogged with dirt, honing and stropping will do no good. Dipping it in hot water dissolves out the debris from between the teeth. ACROSS THE WATERS The American legation at Peking is now prepared for any emergency that might occur in the case of immediate outbreaks of the Chinese. Until now it was supposed that Boxers, who are really at the bottom of the pres ent boycott, had been taught a lesson as a result of the former dash to Pekin. The marriage -of King Alphonsoto Princess Ena of Battenberg has been officially announced by Premier Moret The union will probably take place in June. The American troops attacked the Morow (outlaw) stronghold near Manila March 9th and in the conflict that followed nearly all of the outlaws were slain. The Chinese Governor of Manchuria is anxious for the Japanese abandonment of the country, and as soon as this end is reached it will be open to the world for commerce. THE BEN DAVIS The apple most in evidence in Portland of late is the Ben Davis from M. O. Lownsdale.s orchard at La Fayette, Oregon. As the wholesale price is $1.76 per box, there appears to be a very healthy profit in supplying the Portland market with the best grade of Ben Davis apples at this season of the year. vour stomach churns and digests the food you eat and if foul, or torpid or out of order, your whole system suffers from blood poison. LONDON Queen Alexandra, according to recent correspondence, has risen to a full realiz atiorrof the terrible situation in London at present, and jnore promptly than many others. She has started a fund for the unemployed, has directed the opening of emergency labor yards, and her efforts are now being followed by those of others. It is said that eight hundred thousand men, women and children are today being pushed just a little over the "starvation line" in London. Lady Herbertt said re cently, in appealing for funds: 'So numerous are the superior and re spectable men out of work that their children are literally dying of hunger and cold. In the free schools in the poorer sections of London the teachers are un able to get the children to master their lessons, so pinched with hunger are the little ones." New Century Path. A MODERN MIRACLE Tiuly miraculous seemed the recovery of Mrs. Mollie Holt of this place." writes J. O. R. Hooper, Woodford. Tenn, "she was so wasted by coughing up pus from her lungs. Doctors declared her end so near that her family had watched by her bed-side'forty-eight hours; when, at my urgent request Dr. King's New Discovery was given her, and with the astonishing result that improvement began, and con tinued until she finally completely recov ered, and is a healthy woman today." 60s and $1.00 at itewuh druo co.
