C. Mar. 6.-rThere it a great desire in the Navy Department to be relieved of further expense on account of the abandoned naval itation at Port Royal. It cost nearly $15,000 to main tain the useless establishment last year. The value of the plant which canld be used elsewhere, in less than $500,000 and much of the material, including stone buildings, a decaying dry dock of large dimensions, and obsolete machinery could not be given away, much less sold for money. This is an unfortunate state of affairs, but it has been found that the Port Royal plant is of no use whatever and that the sooner it is disposed of the better for the government The sug gestion of final disposition and abandon ment has been before the House of Naval Committee, and it is expected the descrip tion of the conditions is fully appreciated in Congress. The Navy Department is pushing work as rapidly as possible on the new navy yard at Charleston, which however, presents an additional reason for spending no more money, even for the protection of property, at Port Royal.
