That said election will be for the pur pose of electing the following named officers: One mayor, one city recorder, one city marshal, one city treasurer, one council man from, the first ward, said city, one councilman from the second ward, said city, one councilman from the third ward said city, and two councilmen from the fourth ward, said city. ' That there will be submitted to the tax paying voters of said city, the following propositions to be voted upon: - (a) Shall the said city of La Qrande acquire the springs situated south of said city, known as the Falk Springs and the Schilling Springs, and pipe the waters thereof to the reservoir of said city, at a cost not to exceed $ 1 2.000. ' (b) Shall the city of La Oranda retire the present outstanding bonds of said city, drawing six per cent interest, and in lieu thereof issue bonds not drawing to exceod five per cent. I I UK r Kul ILK Mr. Whitney, who is seeking the nomi nation for state printer on the Republican ticket, is the present incumbent and is now serving his first term. During his administration he has run a strictly union office. He has also inaugurated the eight hour day voluntarily, which has made of Salem an eight-hour town so far as the printing trade is concerned. In addition to this he has raised the scale of the fore man in the composing and press depart ments. He has also earned the reputa tion of being a most excellent employer. The boys in the state printing office have nothing but good words to say for Mr. Whitney. Portland Labor Press. ELECTRIC PUMP 7 Pendleton's water supply is to be pumped into the reservoir by electricity in the future at an annual cost to the water commission of $5,500 a year, for any amount up to 1,200,000 gallons a day. This is according to the terms of a ten year contract entered into yesterday after noon between the water commission and the Northwestern Gas & Electric Com pany. The Electric Company has agieed to provide and install, free of cost to the city, and at any place desired near or at the present water power station, a seventy-five horse-power motor and a two step turbine Worthington pump, capable of pumping 1000 gallons a minute, or a maximum of 1,200,000 gallons a day. Brinckerhoff, of the Harvard Medical School, left here today for New York and Washington, to comple his prepara tions for his departure for the Hawaiian Islands, where he will assume the posi tion of director of the proposed United States Government Leprosy Research Hospital, to be erected under his super vision In the Leper , Settlement. Dr. Brinckerhoff will arrange for the plans and equipment of the hospital and the and the selection.of his staff before his departure for Hawaii, . which will take place in about two or three weeks. Baseball enthusiasms in eastern Oregon will be pleased to know that the famous "Yellow Kid'" baseball nine will in ail probability be reorganiz ed again in Athena this season. .Steps are being taken to again have a team of this kind, which was the record breaker of this section.. Mar. 2 Governor Mead this morning again denied a respite to "Kid" White, who will be 'hanged at Walla Walla penitentiary today White's attorney submitted the confes sion of Convict Hildebrand, White's "part ner" and a life-timer, that White did not fire the fatal shot, and urged a respite. Off FOR EUROPE (Scr'.ppa News Association) New York, Mar. 1 McCurdy sailed for Europe this morning. One by one the life insurance men are seeking other quarters. It is not known whether or not his son and son-in-law will follow. CONSUMPTION INCREASING Average Now Is Four- Hundred Deaths Per Day.
