The Observer received yesterday a copy of the seventeenth annual report of the Oregon Agricultural College for the year ending June 50th. 1 90S. It give the number of student attending that year at 680. being the largest number jver reported. The total disbursements for the year was $74,265.66;' being 109.21 pertudent . , ,' Of the S3 counties In the state. Wheeler ounty i tn only on with no student there, Union ha JS students. But four counties in the state have more students there than Union, Benton county in which the college it located ha the most, 151 No other county in Eastern Oregon ha t many a this. The collage is open to boy and girl, the yoar reported on 476 of the tudents werj boy and 204 girls. - TYjjk') iliis college is sa state institu tion it is dependent for its principal revenues upon the general government Che act of congress July 2d. 1862 grant- id to the state 90.000 acre of land for n agricultural and meehinisal 'school luch of this land has- been sold and the iroceeds constitutes an v irreducible fund, the Interest only Can be used. It ii jgretable that the repirt juit issuec oes not give fuller information as.to thif jnd. It doe not state how much of tht Und has been sold, or how much the rreduciabla . fund amounts to, or what rate of interest it is drawing. , In th receipts tha item "state interest $10, 505.1 1." The book-keeper may know what that item means but to the average ;itizen it has no specific information as to who paid that sum into the college fund or from what source it came. - From tha report before us we learn that up to July 1st., 1905, $78,941.66 had been paid jnto the college, .treasury but with the exception of the $15,000 under tie Hatch act, and $25,000 under the Morrill act, the reader of tha report are given no information as to where the residue came from. be an honest day laborer than a dishonest president of an insurance , company with princely salary: and it is eminently more respectable to fill honestly a humble position of any kind, than to serve as a United States Senator or in any high office when the privilege is purchased with tainted coin. . Again we say, it does indeed, payto be honest ' ' DOCS IT PAY? i Doe the acquisition of illgotten riches pay? is the question every young man ihould '( himself as he embark upon M business sea. Is the burden of a troubled conscience compensated by riches? We think not At this period he result of illgotton gain i placed be bre the public in a most forcible manner ,n the case of John A. McCall, former president of the New York Life Insurance ompany. Yesterday' dispatches chronicled his illness with grave doubts or his recovery. Hi illness is wholly the result of th qualm of conscience. A few year ago, at th time Mr. Mc Call and other life insurance presidents took office with their magnificent salaries, they w,re pointed out with price and up held to the young men of America as examples as to what was in store for th faithful. Today, they are dragged through the mire of candal and driven to oblivion by their disgrace. Only their dishonest method are reaponsible for thir ham. . . Again, ioe it pay to be dishoriett? The, every . wgnway or nr business. political and ooiai teaa to position of honor and trust for him who is honest At this day and age th discrimination i greater than formerly in every line of business.
