Collier's Weekly. Two samples of good roads will be built in Oregon this, summer unJer the direction of government experts. Through the efforts of Senator Fuiton and Senator Hill, the good road enthusiasts, the agri cultural department has agreed to sand esperta and machinery to Oregon to build two specimen roads, each one mile in targth. It is the understanding that the roads shall be built pear Salem and Pen dleton, the respective counties to bear the expense of material and , labor, and the government to pay its experts and furnish machinery. Similar word is to b done in other northwestern states, and it is planned to hereafter build two sample roads until each county has had at least one such highway. The object is to dem onstrate to farmers how good roads can be built and maintained. 5j WHOLESALE PRICFS IMter Lumber and Cheaper than is sold in La Grand. TH MOST IMP02IA2II Our citizens will do well to bear in mind that of all the officers they will be called upon to select it the , election next June, the most important one is the county judge. The county judge has far more influence in shaping county policies and in the management of county business than any other officer. With a wide awake. progressive county judge, the road laws io not reuiain dead lettered laws, and the work done thereon will result in giv ing us good roads. Some counties operat mg under the same statutes are making much better showing than others because the judges in some counties take more interest in road making than in others. The current cou .ty business is one of ri3 small magnitude. The total expense jf carrying o i Union county except for ritdsar.4 .iigh ways, for the year 1903 as $42,090.28. The county board of which the county judge is chairman, pass es upon all bills against the county before the county treasurer can pay them. A commercial house or corporation would ant to hare some assurance of a per ion s ability and integrity before either would piace a man in position as chiel nanager of its business, witn authority to Jraw upan it for ever forty thousano Jollars a year. In addition to being at the head of tht current county business for the living, oui county judges appoint administrator to settle up the estates of the dead. This is clothing one man with an enormous pow er, greater than is posessed by United States senators, governors or any other official. There is now four million dollars worth of taxable property in this county that sooner or later will be under the management of administrators or execut ors who will account to the county judge for the way they manage the estate. Too much care cannot be exercised in select ing a man to look after our children's inheritance. U7K0UI America's great men in the field of public service far surpass, io number end importance, those whom we have pro duced in i.iy other line in history, litera ture, science, or art. It was Gladstone's opinion that nowhere at any time had tnere been gathered together a group of statesman to equal those who surrounded Washington Franklin, Hamilton, Jeffer son. Adams. Madison, Jay. and a number of others deserving to be ranked with these. Since then we have had others standing high Marshall. Webster. Cal houn, day but since Washington, none who equals Lincoln in significance to the nation. And in humanity, in persona representativeness, in universality of feel ing. Lincoln stands for the people, of all kinds and all places, more than any other of our statesmen of any period. The most humorous of our leaders, he was al so most sympathetic and of the deepest charity. "I never heard him utter a com plaint," said Grant. -nor cast a censure.' And Lowell spoke of him as "sagacious, patient, dreading praise, not blame.' Morally, in other words, in attribuths of heart, hie greatness was preeminent. None of our great men mean so much to our hearts as Lincoln. For none is the love of the people so intimate and warm. And in none are found so many qualities which can serve as the inspiration of all of us in daily life.
