The best entertainment ever given by the University of Oregon boys. Such was the verdict last evening at the Marquam Grand when the Glee and Mandolin clubs were heard by the immense audience. Every member was encored and the en tire concert was a triumph. The boxes. gay with the colors of the Multnomah and Oregon teams, were filled with college lads and clubmen, and pleasantries were exchanged during the evening. The pro gram was admirable. Every selectioh was pleasing and the club certainly de served all the compliments showered on on them. Robert Roundtree, the funnv man, was the favorite, and his splendid work was exceedingly clever.' As a fe male impersonator he won new laurels. Extract from Evening Telegram. These two clubs comdined, numbering thirty, will be the attraction at Steward's opera house, Wednesday, Feb. 14. FIRST INSTALLMENT OF ENGINES The first installment of the order from the Baldwin Locomotive Works, of ten engines of the 350 class, arrived this morning and are in the yards, . ready to be set up, Tney are No. 366, 357, 353 and 359. These engines are of the sim ple type. Since ordering six of this class some months ago, they have given such good satisfaction that hereafter they alone will be used on the msuntain divis ion for freight use. ; ; The 310 compound class, also being used on this division on freight, will be regulated to the Washington and lower Oregon divisions. This change has been made to simplify the work of the engi neer of this division as the constant changing from compound to the simple class causes considerable confusion and better resultsfrom the usage of one type. The remaining six will follow tonight and as soon as they are in satisfactory running order they will be placed in the regular service. The pa d up capital of the corporation was $402,192. BEEF CATTLE MOVING The beef cattle are becoming scarcer in the upper valley since the Union Meat Company has set a price of $3.50 per cwt for prime steers. This price takes choice stock out of the county at a rapid pace and in two weeks over 300 head of f'ney stock have left for the Portland market Wallowa News. ROTKF. At Steward's Opera House Feb. 14 BOYCOTT RIVIVCP : A dispatch from Spokane savs: Samuel Glasgow, manager of the Centen nial Mills of Spukane and Seattle,, states he has letters and Hong Kong papers which show that after an agreement had been reached between about fiftv com mercial representatives and the dele gates of various C iinea guilds, wmeby the commerciol men acrreed to recommend certain modifications to the Chinese ex clusion law and request their business houses in this country to urge congress to make them if the boycott was called off. rVilliam J. 6ryin at a banquet delivered a. speech in which he slated that thev would never Consent to. repeal 'the ex clusion law. One of the Chinese mer chants reported the proceedings to the" Chinese papers, quoting Bryan as stating' -natthe labor party is so strong in the United States, that the Chinese workmen skilled or unskilled, would never be per mitted to enter, and drew a gloomy pict ure of what would happen if Chinese were allowed to enter. After Bryan's speech, the Chinese merchants became convinced that congress would not modi fy the law and that their best policy was to put on the boycott screws again.
