BIO TRAVEL PREDICTED A bigger travel to the northwest' than during the Lewis and Clark exposition year is predicted for the summer by W. A. Cox, general agent of the Chicago & Northwestern railway, who has just re turned from a business trip tor Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, .Indian apolis and other points.' "ir tne railroads put on summer rates that are now under consideration in the east, I positively believe the travel to this coast this year will equal if it does not ex ceed, that of last year in Portland," is the way Mr. Cox puts It. This statement, coming seriously from one of the best informed railroad traffic men, fresh from the middle . west and eastern territory, from which Oregon ex pects to draw investors, settlers and tourists tnis year, will surprise most people. It is said that few realize the immense travel that will come from the east to the Pacific coast this year. Mr. Cox closely observed indications that cam within his view on the trip east, and his opinion is based on personal knowledge of what he saw and heard. He says the people who came to the Lewis and Clark fair have don an immense amount of effective advertising for the Pacific northwest, and not only are manv of the same people coming back, hut thousand of other whom they have told of the resources, opportunities and general favorable conditions here. DID IRONSIDES" A suggestion made in the annual report of the secretary of the navy of the possi- oie destruction of the historic old friirate Constitution awakened new interest in the preservation of the ship, which found xpression in the presentation to Congress of a great petition signed by more than 80.000 citizens of Massachusetts. The petition, encased in a bronze roll, was presented in the House by Mr. McCall January 1 8, and was received with cheer. The House adopted a resolution directing the committee on naval affairs to ascer tain the annual cost of proper care of the ship. W, Qoodrrtan, of Huntington, passed through the city last evening with her little son. who was taken to Portland to the Good Samaritan hospital to under go an operation. Mr. Goodman came as far as this place, returning to Huntington this morning. Mr. Peter O'SulIivan, who has been visiting with his family at La Grande foe the past month, returned to Joseph last Friday, Mr. O'SulIivan reports Miss Mamie and Mrs. O'SulIivan to be greatly improved, in health. Joseph Herald. Chief Engineer Pickler returned Sunday morning from Weiser, Idaho, where he went to give expert testimony in" a suit in which his knowledge of irrigation mat ters was important Mr. Pickler says that while there the Malheur ditch, which he planned, surveyed and partially built, was sold for one hundred and sixty thous and 'dollars, twenty thousand of which were paid last Saturday. Mr. Pickler has had much experience in irrigation project i and has several successful irrigation sys tems now in operation to his credit. He is deeply interested in irrigation matter in thi valley. Senator Peter McDonald, of Alicel is in the city today on business connected with the court house. , '. The body of H. C. West - was brought down from Baker City last evening and the funeral was held this afternoon from the family residence. . 0. E. Harper,'' president of the Blue Mountain Creameries, left this morning for a trip to Baker - City, Sumpter and Austin, on business connected, with his institutions. , . Ge H. Cufry Jr. and Everett Knowles are both nursing a pair of badly scalded legs. Their injuries are the result of coal oil engine explosion. These young gentlemen were experimenting with an unprovized steam engine, and the pres sure became to great for the oil can boiler and an'explosion took place. The hot water stuck the boys and severely scalded them both. Bo:h boys are under the care of a doctor. Mr.'Frank Wrightman. of Salem, who fias been in Eastern Oregon for several days in the interest of his candirfacy for the nomination of secretary of state, ar rived here this morning from Ontario and win leave for Pendleton this evenng. Mr. Wrightman is a man of standing in his home county, having been chairman of the county central committee; in the sheriffs office for ten years; is now pres ident of the Marion county Bar Associa tion, and is and has been in the office of! the secretary of .state in charge of the corporation department.
