Seventh Grade Pupils, Seymour, , Dear friends: Hearing that you would like to hear from some school in the far east or in the west, we decided to write you a few lines.- I live in the suburb of La Grande called Fruitdale. My father took the contract to build the state fish hatchery not many months ago The Wallowa River Salmon Fish Hatch ery which is a state building was built in the summer of 1905. It is situated on the left bank of the Wallowa river one and one half miles below where the F.loin and Joseph stage line runs. . The state of Oregon owns 22U acres or tana wime u hatcher; is located. It is 14 miles - northeast , of - Elgin -but still in Union county. The river there forms the boundary between Union and Wallowa counties. . The object of the fish hatchery Is to hatch salmon eggs and with the equipment that they hayjt they will be able to hatch from 16 to 25 mil ion fish each season. The building is 230 feet long, 66 feet 4 inches wide and 10 feet up. to the eaves. It has 4 doors, 38 windows and 53 sky lights 8 feet square. This building has fresh running water running through it all the time. This water is brought from three-fourths of a mile up the through a flume which cost the state about $1000, and the hatchery building" cost nearly $5000. The superintendent A. D. Al len's house cost the state about $1000. There was a short run of salmon this season, so they did not take ae many eggs as they could take care of, but they have about two million little fish, or they will have that amount when they are all hatched and that time will be early in the spring. These little fish do not eat any thing until they . are about three months old then they breed them and keep them until they are about 2 -or. inches long. then they are turned in to the river and' they go for the ocean and they are sup posed to reach salt water in side of a year after they are in the ocean. They are not heard of for four years then they will re turn up the same stream in which they were hatched to spawn after -which they all die. ' So the life of a salmon is reckon ed at four years. Another strange thing about them is that they do not eat any thing after they leave salt watert so they slowly starve to death in two or three months. This season they arrived at the hatch ery about the 10th to the 20th of July. This time will vary some with the season and the height of the water.
