Jeweler and Optician The Kaffee-Klatch was most charming ly entertained at whist last evening by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Bragg and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Crawford at the former's pretty home on Adams Avenue. In ad dition to the club members present, there were: Mr. and Mrs. Nibley of Perry, Mr. Will Wright of Union, and Mr. and Mrs. Martin. Refreshments which gave proof of the hostesses culinary , skill, were daintily served. PLEASANT SURPRISE Mrs. J. C. Zuber and daughter Miss Dorothy gave a most complete and enjoy able surprise party on their daughter and sister Mrs. J. H. Childs. The event was in honor of Mrs. Chijds' thirty-eighth birthday. The evening was pleasantly spent in merry conversation and cards. Dainty refreshments were served. About thirty-five guests were present to offer Mrs. Childs their felicitations. BASKET SOCIAL The order of the Fraternal Tribune, Lodge No. 1 1 9, gave an old time basket social last evening in the I. 0. 0. F. Hall. There were about 25 baskets on sale and all went readily, for never was luncheon so tempting as when snugly placed in a pretty little basket One of the amus ing features of the evening was the con test in "Sea Side Views" in which Alverta Gates carried off honors. ' Mr. Kammer ar received the "booby" for his untiring efforts. Pearce, candidate for the nomi nation of state, secretary is in the city today from Salem. I Frank Ayers of Kamela is in the city today. He came down on legal business and expects to return this evening. Chester Hansen returned to his home in Telocaset this morning after visiting in this city several days. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Roszell of Payette Idaho is in the city visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ceo. H. RozelL Mrs. F. S. lvanhoe came over from Pendleton last evening on a visit and to attend the Taming of the Shrew, this evening. . R. & N. offices at La Grande, came over this morning on a tour of the line. Pendleton E. 0, W. A. Storie, of the bridge building de partment of the 0. R. & N. is over from Pendleton today on business connnected with hia department Postmaster Lewis of Hilgard ia in the city today. Ha came down to attend the "Taming of the Shrew Mr. Frank T. Williams, a recent ar rival from Indiana, who purchased the Pixton property in the Cove, came over today to finish moving his household goods. Mr. Williams states that he and his family are delighted with their new home. County Clerk J. B. Gilham returned last evening from Hot Lake where he has been for several days. He is able to re sume his duties today much improved in health. Frank Reed, who was ODerated uDon Thursday for appendicitis, is in a very serious condition owing to the fact that he had had several previous attacks of the disease, and at the time the operation took place, srancrene had set in. Grand Master Mason W. H. Flanagan. accompanied by Grand Secretary Robin son of Eugene, Lot Pearce, Grand Sr. Warden of Albany and Jr. Warden E. F. Mr. Dupes is one of the youngest engineers now working on the 0. R. & N. at La Grande.' and hie bride is the eldest daughter of Engineer Henry Henson, of the La Grande-Huntinzton passenger division of the 0. Miss Jennie Holverson, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Porter, the past week returned to her home at Hilgard this morning. Miss Harriett Harris ia in Portland hav ing her ayes treated by a specialist She was met at Hood River by her father, T. S. Harris who accompanied her to Portland. . G. W. Huffaker has moved his family over from Cove where he has been re siding for the several months past Mr. Huffaker will leave to night for Yakima county where he will seek a location. Mr. Chs. Minnaugh of Perry is in the city today. He will remain over this evening to attend Chas. B. Hanford's presentation of "The Taming of the Shrew." Miss Francis Heritage, the successful Hilgard teacher, is visiting friends in La Grande, and will remain here over Sun day. Mr. Ezra Funk has sold his La Grande home to Mrs. Dalstrom, and will remove to Hilgard where ha will make his future home. Miss Emma and May Farnsworth, of Heppner, who have been visiting Mrs. V. C Hart of Hilgard. the past ten days left thisrnorning for Baker City. White & Grider have a contract for 53.003 ties to be cut this summer, be tween here and Kamela. The contraot w.ll give steady employment to 55 men through the season. The ties are for the Denver & Rio Grande. W. A. Worstel, who has been securing signatures for the petitions for the five constitutional amendments has completed his work, having sent in 642 names. If the balance of the counties have done anything like as wall the people will have an opportunity to vote on them. MISUNDERSTOOD The other day a lady, after making a purchase in a shop, absent-mindedly walked away - witn anouw ,...'; umbrella. The customer hurried after her, and the lady, with apologies, returned the umbrella. This reminded har that she. wanted haw umbrellas for herself and two daughters. 'After buying them she entered a car, and on sitting down she found herself opposite the owner of tha first umbrella.
