"Little drop of water Applied to grains of sand Make a mighty difference In the price of land." Sewerage for 1 906. What a difference it would make ir. this valley if the tract known as the McCon nell land could be made to produce beets profitably. It would mean the disburse ment of thousands of dollars and would populate several thousands of acre. It is time that steps be taken towards a proper sewerage. . 1906 should see La Grande seweraged. It will cost no more this year than next and the sooner the better. Some advocate paved streets, but the next move should be for a sewer age. (OMIT POLITICS It would be well if the voters of Union county would make a close study of the present laws that control county business and find out if these laws cannot be changed so that the forty odd thousand dollars annually expended to carry on this county cannot be applied to render more benefit to the people. In 190S the county, circuit and justice of the peace courts cost Union county $7836,80 not counting the salary of the circuit Judge. ' The sheriffs office cost $4,699.96. The total expense of Union county that year was $42,090.68. The expenses for 1903, are given because they are the last official report in detail that we have. ANItOUIKEMEKT TO THE REPUBLICAN VOTERS OF UNION COUNTY I hereby announce, myself as Candidate for the Republican nomi nation for County Judge, subject to the primary nominating election to be held April 20th. J. C. Henry. A MODERN MIRACLE "Tiuly miraculous seemed the recovery of Mrs. Mollis Holt of this place," writes O. R. Hooper, Woodford, Tenn "she was so waited by coughing up pus from her hangs. . Doctors declared her end so near that her family had watched by her bed-side forty-eight hours; when, at my urgent request Dr. King's New Discovery was given her, and with the astonishing result that improvement began, and con tinued until she finally completely recov ered, and Is a healthy woman today." 60 and $1.00 at newlih oruo co. Trial ottle fre. From the most reliable sources avail able it seems that the Chinese art de termined to quit trading with the Ameri cans. This from a commercial view point means much to the people of Oregon but valuable as the trade now is to us with China, and great as we have dream ed it will be in the future it is doubtful if we can afford to concede to the demand of the Chinamen and open our ports to the unrestricted inflow of Chinese laborers if that Is their real object. The Chinamen deny that this is their real object, but that all that they ask is that our people treat their people who came here under existing laws with the same degree of fairness that we treat immigrants from other countries. On the issue thus raised the Chinese have the best of the argument i RETAILED AT i WHOLESALE PRICES Bitter Lumber and Cheaper than is sold In La Grande, We deliver it to your building Claude I nude Lumber Co itRRY, OKLGON " UPHOLSTERING AND CABINET ' MAKING Furniture repaired and upholstered No order too small or too large.
