General Sharp has ordered three "Art'
less cookers" sufficiently Jarg to cook
food for 100 men to be sent to the Pre-
sidio at San Francisco, the Philippines and
Washington, respectively. The Artless
stove or "hay box" ae it is sometimes
called, is merely a large, air tight chest
filled with straw, felt, paper or some
other non-conducting material. Nests
are made in the filling large enough to
hold cooking pot. The cooking is started
on the stove in the ordinary manner, and
then, without taking off the cover of th
kettles, they are placed in the nests with
in the chest and th lid shut down. The
theory is that they will continue to cook

Port Riley, they were found to be very
satisfactory. When taken out of th box
four or five hour after they had been
placed therein, cabbage, bean, custard,
corned-beef and other foods were found
to be cooking merrily away at tempera
tures varying from 176 to 196 degrees,

Metcalf of the department of commerce
and labor has been leaching the Yankees
how they shoot out on the Pacific. Al
though a New Yorker by birth, the "baby
of the Cabinet" clings to things western
as barnicles to a ship. One of those
things he loves to do is to shoot and every
Saturday finds him on the range.
Two pupils have advanced to the sen
ior class and believe they are ready for
diplomas. They are Assistant Secretary
Murray of the department of commerce
and labor and Solicitor Sims, assigned to
the same department from the depart
ment of justice. But the teacher main
tains his dignity as an instructor by keep
ing safely ahead of his pupils when they
11 line up before the birds.
All are members of the Analostan Gun
Club, which has a range on an island in
the Potomac quite near the city. Satur
day noon there is always great activity
at the department; preparations are un
der way for the shoot. The trio are off
as soon as the secretary can close up his
business and the remaining hours are
spent with the guns. So far the secre
tary has a record of 78 out of a possible
100, while Assistant Secretary Murray
follows with i 4, and Solicitor Sims, with
th best gun in the outfit, must be con
tent with a bare 70. It' a proud day for
th secretary wiien he returns with a
record of ten out of a possible ten.
The popular secretary got his training
in shooting ducks at his home in Californ
ia. The story has drifted east that one
day he was so successful that in return
ing horn across the bay, his boat actual
ly began to sink under th enormous
weight of the ducks. Some of th jeal
ous huntsmen in Washington asked the
secretary about it, and after blushing, he
said if he remembered correctly his ves
sel was struck by another boat.
Charles Broock, landlord of th Quimby
Hotel. North Fourth Street, who recently
returned from a trip to Germany, his na-
tive land, feels elated at having evened
scores with a burly second mate who
brutally beat him when he was a boy.
"My principal business home was to

time it took me to travel the 12.000 miles
to do it," he said today.
'Twenty-four years ago I was a deck
boy on a sailing vessel plying between
German ports, and this fellow knocked
me down and kicked me with his heavy
