This is a relic of bar barism that is found in a greater or less degree among all classes and conditions of men. The . members of a class view with distrust all those who would enter it and participate in its privileges and honor and to guard their assumed right the old member place impediments, tedios and often disagreeable and humilitating initia tory ceremonies to be endured by those who seek to enter its exalted circle. The senate of the United State hazes new members by imposing silence'and a coy demeanor on the part of newly elect ed members. Communities, cities vil lagssand neighborhoods haze newcomers by a similar exaotion and woe betide the tender foot" who attempt to talk out in their councils about public matter until hi probation of meekness ha expired College boy haze by making "plebe' stand on their heads or crawl under tables. The United States senate by imposing silence and communities by placing the new commers in the corners to sweat and get homesick. SUGAR MAKING AND EATING The making of eugar in the United Stales is increasing faster than almost any other industry and there is room for yet farther expansion before enough sugar is made in the United States to supply the people. In the fiscal year end ing with June 1905 there were 535.000 long ton of cane ugar made in the United State and 209722 long ton beet eugar a total of 644,722 long ton. For the same time we imported 1,653, 094 long ton of sugar. These figure how that we do not make quite one third of the eugar we consume. The ugar, beet out put in the fiscal years 1884-5 was 953 long ton and in 1904 5 it was 209,722 an increase In the 20 year of 208,769 long tons. The increase in the output of cane eugar for the came time was 234.124 long tons. The per capita consumption of sugar in the United State in 1884 was 63.4 pounds, and in 1904 it was 68,7 an in crease of consumption in twenty years of 1 5,3 pounds per capita. GRAIN SHIPS The Oregonian of Jan. 29th. gives a list of sixteen ocean going ship an route and listed for Portland for cargoes of grain, these ships have an aggregate tonnage of 29.114. Six of these shies carry the British flag, seven the French flag, two the German and one the Italian flag, but not one the American flag. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1905, the United Kingdom imported 203,90.0 tons of butter. Of this amount 152,000 tons or 74 per cent came from countries other than British colonial pos sessians. England buys much of her butter in Denmark. Shipments from that country during the last fiscal year were 83,600 tons, or 40 per cent of total imports into the United Kingdom.
