revocation of tha Interior Department's
order witholding all patent in Oregon,
the last hi at ani inconvenience for the
general public of tha state has bean re
moved. While every enteryman in Ore
gon was denied a patent, or even final
hearing in his effort to secure title to his
proparty. the entire stats fait the gj.ieral
imputation upon its name. No heed was
given to the strict adherence to the law
by aiy person, but because the Secretary
f .he-Interior so willed, and because he
was engaged in prosecuting law-breakers,
every citizen of Oregon was kept for.
nearly a year in the light of suspicioned
people.
Shortly after the land, fraud cases were
opened in the federal grand jury, the
prosecuting officers requested that no
further patent be issued to Oregon men
for the time. The excuse given by the
attorneys for the government was that
the work of catching the offenders was

the secretary of the Interior acMd, and
did not alter the situation until a most
vigorous campaign was made to open to

the scope of the government's cases had
been outlined by the grand jury reports,
and it became evident that the federal
attorneys were going to devote their time
to convincing in cases presented, rather
than to seeking new ones, the senior sen
ator urged , the interior department to
grant all citizens not In' districts affected
by the prosecutions, the right of patent

gular and above suspicion. Commissioner
of General Land Office Richards, seemed
more ready to acquiesce. . Last December
he wrote secretary of the interior urging
that the order ' be revoked. ,This letter
was daied December 18. Later Senator
Fulton saw the president in Derson r.
garding thi situation, and explained the
trouble inflicted upon . the people of the
state In January- the secretary of the
interior granted the requests, at first in
dicating his purpose of opening mineral
patent, and soon after opening all offices.
Had it not been for the friendly interest

affairs, and probably a word . from the
president, the senior Oregon senator
would hive been compelled to. struggle on
for some time longer before he could have
lifted the general badge of suspicion
which the interior department's action had
placed over the state's name.
