IHKKIITS If a fool and his folly were as easily separated as a fool and.his money, what a lot of wise folks there would be. Sam Jones is soon to begin a series of revival meetings in Portland and threat- ene to convert the town. Sam always was fond of tough Jobs. The spectacle of old Ben Tillman weep ing in the Senate must have been a sight for the gods on high Olympus. The difference between a doctor of medicine and a doctor of divinity is chron ological. One tries to save his patient before and the other after. William J. Bryan is sojouring in Borneo. Thus the people of that far island will be able to learn bow a real wild man may be tamed by two Democratic Presidential nominations. COST Of (AMPAKH The Publicity Bill National committee met in Washington. D. C a few days ago and passed the following resolution. 'Roiolved, That the organization be now formally completed for the purpose of eliminating by all appropriate methods the evils which result from the expendi ture of large sums of money in political elections, the object of the committee being to secure the passage of an act of congress providing for publicity in the receipts and expenditures of the national committee of political parties and to pro mote the formation of local organizations for elimating such evils in the various states and territories." Perry Belmont was elected permanent chairman. "To reach the heart or get a vote The surest way is down the throat But this old way produced much racket Twas found much safer to fill the pocket The result of this manner of securing office in the United States made it almost impossible for a poor man to be elected to an office, unless soma rich corporation or other money making interest would "back him" with the expectation of using him when in office, to enable them to cinch the public To change this is the object of the Publicity Bill. The law in this country makes it im perative that when one of its United States Senators fails of' re-election he ceases to be a member of that body, tn England such is not necessarilly the case. In the recent election the great Balfour was defeated in his borne district but at least a half dozen members have offered to resign and give him their seat,- and he wili undoubtedly accept one of the several offers and retain his leadership in parliment. The Washington correspondent of the Chicago Tribune reported some time ago. that Secretary Metcalf of the department of commerce and labor and Commissioner Garfield had been warned by Standard Oil people that if they persisted in their course of investigation their dismissal would be secured. The probing into the illegal methods of the octopus continued but no dismissals have followed. Corrupt senators no longer dominate public busi ness at the capital President Roosevelt is at the helm, and all the millions at the com man? of the Standard Oil magnates can not swerve him from the stand he has taken against grasping monopoly and corporate greed.-Boise Capital News Free city deEvery is another step that 1906 win see inaugurated in La Grands We have had more winter so far this season than for several years yet the coldest pomi touched baa only been 17 above zero. This is a regular summer resort compared with the east and the snow ia just what we need, in fact we would welcome several more heavy snows and the chances are we will be accommo dated before the buttercups begin to bloom. By noting the comparison of assess ments of the counties of the state for the years of 1904 and 1905 which appears in this issue we note that in Union county the values, after being cut ir.to by the board of equalization, show an increase of SI. 404.634, Valuations are of little importance the tax rate is what tells the story. On the 1904 assessment, which was $4,123,995 the county levy was 35 mills as against 28yi' mills on $5,628.- 639 the 1905 assessment the former !c-y rrvM" " emmt tax of $44. 339. the last levy of 28 V mills wili pro duce $187,666. or $13.12? more.
