Gust has just returned from Butte which he says is booming, and every body making money. He disposed of a piece of property and cleared up several thousand dollars. Edwin Smith, Editor of the semi weekly Spokesman Review and C. J. Freese district agent at Walla Walla, are in the city today attending the Fruitgrow ers Association. Miss Francis Heritage of La Grande is visiting with her sister, Mrs. John Halley. near this city. Miss Francis is quite well known in this city, having made many warm friends while visiting here two years ago. Enterprise Chief tian. All voters of the five La Grande voting precincts must register at the county clerk's office before they can vote at the primaries. Voters elsewhere in the county may register before notary public or justice of the peace. Miss L. R. Lorenz arrived in the city from Pendleton this morning and is the guest of Miss Lillian McCall a.id other friends in this city. Miss Lorenz came up from Pendleton to report the Fruit Growers convention for the Portland Journal which she now represents in Eastern Oregon. SUPRTmE COURT DECISIONS Salem. Jan. 3. In the case of Cora Steel against the Island City Mercantile & Milling company the judgment was affirmed. Steel won in the lower court. The suit was brought by a stockholder against the corporation for an accounting lor dividends declared on the cap.ta stock. The case of Eliza Carroll asainst the Grande Ronde Electric company was amrmed. l ha electric company won I the lower court. This was the case i which a mother sought to recover dam ages for the death of her son, alleged to have been caused by the negligence of the company. The courts decided that his death was due to his own carelessness. The case of S. S. Booth against the Farmers & Traders' National bank of La Grande was affirmed. The bank won in the lower courts. This was an action to recover the balance alleged to be due on depasits. It was also decided that Moses Tavlnr of Athena, convicted of arson, must serve three years and G rover Martin ten year ror murdering O. N. Preston at Free water. Alustice Hailey took no part in the delib erations on the docisions in the criminal cases. BRYAN AT MANILA Manila, Jan. 2. Brilliant receptions were held today by Major-General Corbin and Acting Governor Ids. William Jen nings Bryan received with the latter. Aguinaldo and many other insurgent officers attended. Next Wednesday Mr Brayn will leave for tha Southern Islands Captain Moss. General Corbin's aide, will accompany him as far as Borneo. TOOK TOO MUCH MORPHINE An overdose of morphine is responsible fcr the condition of W. J. Row, formerly a La Grande railroad man, who is at present at the Walla Walla Hospital in a dangerous condition. It is not known whether the poison was taken accidently or with suicidal intent. He was found in his room over ' the Crane saloon. 118 Main Street, about 11 o'clock Sunday night, and after a physician was called, was removed to the hospital where more facilites were at hand. The man is a member of the Order of Railway Con ductors and has been here or several days. For the past few days he has been drinking heavily and his friends, fearing some accident have been keeping a care ful wa'ch over him. . The dose he took was from 25 to 60 grains of morphine, and whether or not he will recover is in d3Ubt. Walla Waiisr union. TRIBUTE TO OREGON In Goodwin's Weeklv. of Salt Lak City, is found the following: - "Special attention has been called to Oregon during the past year- because of her Lewis and Clark exposition. Though almost within the sound of the waves of the Pacific breaking upon her coast, the exposition, was an immense success, and thousands of people have now a clear idea of Oregon who but a few years ago could not have bounded the state, to save their lives. And all thair impressions are hap py ones, for in stately timber, rich valleys, glorified rivers and scenery that is a per petual delight, no state exceeds Oregon. "No DSODle are mora nrnnrnn than they; no people more country-loving. uregon is one of the great states of the union in all the attributes that make a state great," BASKET BALL .The third game of basket ball will 'be played Thursday evening at the Armory hall between the O. N. G. and tha Com mercial Club teams. i The crowd which witnessed the game last week at the Commercial Club was all enthusiastic over the game and declar ed tnat from the spectators stand point it rivals both base and foot ball. The guards have strengthened their team considerably since they were de feated by the High School, and .declare that the Commercial Club will have to "go some" if they take their scalps into camp after the same manner th aarvsH theHigh School. The Commercial Cluh practice will be Interfered with this week by the Fruitgrowers convention which meets in their hall, but they will be on hand Thursday night ready to play good basket ball just the same.
