once before by the Government, but was
saved by the enthusiasm aroused jby a
poem of Holmes. ; .
It is often complained that we have too
few national monuments, and relics of
great events in this country, and yet we
seem bound to destroy those remaining.
The few that have been preserved were
saved, for the most part by patriotic men
and women, and not by the Government
It is to be hoped that the public protest
will prevail, and that this famous old
vessel will be preserved, to teach coming
generations how she held the seas "in the
brave days of old."
While the railroad employees are not
enthusiastic over the call to take the snow
plow out on the road, a prominent farmer
remarked this morning that those years
when the p'ow was the most active that
Grande Ronde was always blessed with
good crops.

The Fruit Growers Association which
will Commences Its three days session
here tomorrow, suggests that in order to
more fully understand the distinguished
men who will be here to tatk about fruit
that we refresh our memories as to the
quantity bf fruit grown in this state and
county. The figures below will be found
in Vol. 6 . report of the 12th. census.
Each reader can make his own estimate
as to thergrowth of the fruit industry here
in the past five years. '
The total value of fruit grown in
orchards on grape vines, and on small
fruit producing gf'owth in the census year
1899. was $1,456,201 In Oregon.
Value of orchard fruit grown in the U S
1899 was $83,751,840. which grew on
367.164.694 trees which was 173,712,-
1 06 more orchard trees than reported in
the census of 1890. The grape crops In
the last census is given as being worth
$14,000,937,'that of small fruit at $25,-
030,877 and sub tropical fruits at 8,649,
863, making the entire fruit crop grown
during the last census year aggregates
$131,423,517.
The last census gives the total value of
all fruits grown in Oregon in 1899 at
$1,456,201, of which $906,015 was
orchard fruit $162,643 grapes, $383,632
small fruits and $1 1 worth of sub tropical
fruit.
In the last census year Union county
had 161.78.1 apple trees. 1.065 apricot
trees, 18,325 cherry trees. e2,022 peach
and nectarine trees, 16,727 pear trees,
59,792 plum and prune trees and 1,022
unclass flad making a total of 270.734
orchard trees. ,.
There were 6.85 1 grape vines in Union
county. 1
The last census reports 21 acres in
black and dewberries in Union county,
1 acres in currants, 8 acres in goose
berries, 43 acres in raspberries and logan
berries, and 75 acres in strawberries.
The total value of small fruit for Union
county was given at $22,057 that of the
orchard fruits at $44,366 and grape
vines at $268 making the fruit crop of
Union county during the last census year
total $66,691. The same report gives
the value of forest products of Union
county for the census year at $68,099.
Nineteen hundred six brings a prosperity
blanket which extends over Grande Ronde

and becomes deeper as the mountain
ranges extend upward.
Kentucky is now in the throes of a
senatorial deadlock. Oregon has had her
share, but if the people as expressed
through the primaries is respected, dead
locks in Oregon will be a thing of the
past " '

The recent recommendation of the Sec
retary of the Navy, Mr Bonapart that
the Constitution, better known as Old
Ironsides, the most famous ship that has.
ever borne the Stars and Stripes through
the 'smoke of battle, be broken up, has

buy it in order that this famous vessel
