Dee. 1 9 Accord ing to a report just issued by the board of trade of Great Britian that nation has increased her output of 'coal by nearly 5,000,000 tons during the last three years where as her greatest rival, ' the United States, has dropped 6,000,000 tons since the last year of the returns. But,' ac cording to the report, Great Britain is still a bad second in the coal production of the world, being beaten by more than 80,000.000 tons by the United States. Germany, which is third on the list is creeping nearer, and the three countries for the recorded year are; United States, 3 1-4,663,000 tons; Great Britain. 232,. 428,000 tons, and Germany. 120.816. 000 tons. The total known coal pro duction of the world if now about 790,000 tons per annum, of' which the United States produces, rather mora and the United Kingdom rather less than one third. POLICE CHIEF KILLED Wallace, Idaho,' Dec. 21. Thomaf H. Beck, chief of police of Wallace, who was working a a timberman in the Standard mine, was killed today. He was struck by a timber hurled by a train in the tun nel. On August 26 Beck killed Oscar 01 son, in a saloon fight and was awaiting trial for the murder. Since his arrest he has not been, acting as chief, but was not removed. SUMMERVILLI SlfTINGS Fine weather at present Mrs. J, L. Christian made a business trip to La Grande Monday. Born To Mr. and Mrs. Roger a son. Mr. Martin Jarnagin of Elgin was a cailer in this city Tuesday. Mr. J. L. Christian left Tuesday for Hilgard. . Mrs. Gilham and children of La Grande, are visiting with Mrs. H. C. Rinehart Mr. Jim Childers of Baker City was a caller in our town last week. Died December 18, at his home near Summerville, Mr. Morris Wright. The funeral took place Wednesday at La Grande. Mrs. Anna Royes has been on the sick list this week. ' Mr. and Mrs. Piatt and family left this week for Spokane to spend the holidays. After that they will return to La Grande. ! wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. , . TO BRING INFANTRY HOME Washington' Dec. 21. -Arrangements are being made at the war" department for the relief of the Third infantry from duty in Alaska, which will be brought home in August, 1 906, from its service in the far north. There is talk now that the first infantry, at Fort Wayne, Mich,; Fort Brady, Mich., Fort Sheridan, 111.; and Fort Porter. N. Y., will get the assignment to succeed the Third. PIANO TUNING j. C.
