We Have the Goods K fcOOKS, DOLS, GLOVES, ETC Presents for old and young J There comes to our table just in time for our Christmas issue the following. which we are glad to put before our read ers: ' ; . ": Miss M., daughter of one of our prom inent merchants, had been invited to a Christmas party where she would meet a young gentleman in regard to whom she had - especial interest and .desired to look her best. She persuaded her father to make her a Christmas present of S40 with which she proposed to obtain some very beautiful trimming for thj dress she intended to wear. On her way to pur chase the trimming she had occasion to pass through a street Cllad with the ten- emants of the poor, and found her way clsoed by a envd in the nvadh of which was a sewing machine. . Scarcely ever before had she been in c!ose coitact w ih actual msery. Pjjr, to her, simply marvt not rich., But as she was atuut to seek a passags through tne crowd, words tell upon her ears tnati arrested her attention. 'Twenty-five dollars I've paid you on that machine and now : you'll not give me time. I only ask time. I'm an honest woman. I'll pa y . ' you. v "Man, do you know it's all there is between us and starvation? ' Let me have the thing back. It's but ten dollars owe you." '' :'! ( "You've owed that two msnths." re plied the man. "Come, let go missus. .'. I don't want to hurt you. I've got to obey orders money or the machine."" V ...but the woman did not relinquish her hold. Still clutching the machine she turned her agonizing eyes upon, the by standers. V i i "Twenty-five dollars." she' repeated, "and the machine but thirty-five dollars, and he's taking it. I never failed until Jim broke his leg. and his work( stopped, and hi's wages with it, and I'd doctor bills and all." x "No, that she didn't," cried a voice from the crowd. "I'm knowing ot her honesty." v ;, . ' "And he'd better be off with his cart" IV IE, M. Wellman & Company j ADAMS AVENUE 1 CITY BREWERY ! S JULIUS ROESCH,. Proprietor. "Look here, good people," exclaimed the man who held the machine,- "1 don't want to do this. I obey ord r or lose my place and my bread and butter. She'd better go to the boss and talk to him not to me.",. . ; . ;'. ,j ... . "I've been," said the woman. "He's made of stone. I told him he'd starve us. There, what is the use. They've more than the worth of the thing now, God knows, but they've the power, Take it. And she let go her hold and covered her eyes with her nands. , But in the place of her rough, red fingers, others dainty and small and well gloved, came down upon the cover of the machine, and Miss M. said, "Will you let this woman keep her machine if I pay you ten dollars?" "Them's the boss's orders. Miss," re- pima uie man, anu m im uuwt uu it. too." Then, while the crowd gathered close, and tha woman who had told her piteous tale sobbed with joy, Miss M. drew the sum named from her purse, received a receipt which she gave to the poor wo man, and experienced the' delight which the performance of an utterly unselfish act brings with it ' . "I don't mind anything now. Miss," sobbed the woman. "The machine is my own and I don't mind how hard I work. LThe only great tug is the landlord four dollars a month for .rent" 11 ' ';' Miss M. handed the woman twelve dol lars to pay for three months' rent at the end of which time the woman thought that her husband, would be able to work. As she went her way home she had no regrets for the lost trimming, and at the Christmas party which she attended she was made particularly happy by the kind attentions of the young gentleman whose good opinion she was anxious to obtain. Dumb Animals. TO ABANDON MALHEUR , PROJECT Secretary Hitchcock has com to the conclusion that the ' allottment of funds for the Malheur Irrigation project should be withdrawn, and the enterprise abend' oned. He was influenced in reaching this conclusion by the nature of the legal obstacles In the way of going on with the enterprise. One of these Is the apparent impos sibility of making amicable and satisfact ory arrangements with the owners of the wagon road grants, who refuse to con form to the requirement of the irrigation law, providing that 160 acres shall be the limit of acreage in' single ownership to receive the benefits of the act, - Another it the demand of the Corvallit & Easern railroad for compensation for damage to its right of way through Mal heur canyon, which would follow the con s'ruction of irrigation works as planned by the reclamation service. In addition, it is estimated that It would cost $42 an acre to , irrigate the lands under the project and ' the price it deemed by the secretary practically pro hibitive. The director of the geological surrey. who hat been called on to state the rea sons why the project should not be abandoned, in a letter to the secretary today advises that the definite act of ab andoning the project be , deferred in ex pectation that the legal obstacles may be removed by futher negotiation.
