', The last session of Literary Society for 1908 will be held next Friday afternoon. Examinations were held by the super intendent in four rooms last week, the B seventh, B sixth; A seventh and B sixth. A seventh and B fourth. The standings attained bv the children in these tes! were much lower than-we had hoped the would be. In almost every case the habitual indifference and carelessnes; seemed to be the Drevailine fault. W have serious doubts whether the school i able to correct ehis failina in children' without more aid from the homes than we are now receiving. Again we beg to ask the pmnts to inquire of children the .subject or branch of subject and point in the progress being made, then drill child, In this way. the child will see that they are interested in his work and as a result will take more interest himself. If the parent is indifferent and careless as to the progress of his child in school, the child will also be indifferent and careless about his work. Verily the parent is the prototype of the child. The sunerintendent herewith makes acknowledgment to some of our business men for calendars and blotters recently received. ' : ' Prof. L. J. Phoebus, formerly a princi- nal at ToDeka. Kansas, but now a re sident of Seattle, called at the office last Thursday evening, to renew an acquaint ance with the superintendant dating many years back. . Our basket ball girls tell us that their basket ball which has been lost since the Pendleton nme. at last come to lieht They have heard from what is purported to be an authentic source of information. that it was purloined by the Pendleton team, as a souvenir, and now adorns the walls of the Pendleton schools em banished with the score of the same in which it was used. - Judge Eakin and Mr Ivanhot were welcome visitors in our schools once or twice last week. The superintendent is pleased to note in this connection that the La Grande school board is about the only school board he has ever known whose members visit the schools and come in actual touch with the school work. It is encouraging to teachers to feel that those who directly employ them have a person al interest In the school. The Senior Class in the' subject of American History have taken up the characters of some of our leading states men. beins reauirea to make an exnaus tive study -of the characters assigned, and furnishing an interpretation of the char acter in its relation to our nations life. Reports have come to us that certain children have been injuring property by throwing stones on their way to and from school. Persons seeing conduct of this nature will confer a favor upon us if they will ascertain the name of these offenders and report same to superintendent COURT AT UNION Judire Robert Eakin. Attorney T, H. Crawford and Court Stenographer Hanna went to Union this morning to hear the celebrated Nodine case, which has been in the courts ot this county for several Governor George Chamberlain was a passenger on the same train, com ing up from Portland to assist in the case. The governor was retained on this case before his election to hi present office so continues to be interested.
