yellow races has about run its course in

done, about the only rational expedient
seems to be to invite colonies from the
United States or from Europe.
New York gentleman has arranged, or is
arranging, in gratitude for the services of
the horses of the New York fire depart
ment, that when they cease to be useful
in that department they shall be pension
ed during the remainder of their lives.

shall be erected, this gentleman s name
will be entitled to a prominent place in it,
as will also General Sherman's name be
cause of his famous words, (alike impor
tant for horses and men), "War is Hell."

by given of the proposed improvement
of Washington Avenue, In the City of
La Grande, Oregon, by the construction
of a seven foot side-walk on the East
side of said Washington Avenue, between
Eim and Fir Street in said City. Said
side-walk to be constructed by the abutt
ing property owners.
Notice is further given that unless said
proposed improvement is defeated by
remonstrance signed by the abutting
property owners and filled : with the
undersigned on or before the 25rd day
of December 1 908, said side-walk will,
be ordered constructed by the Council, of
the City of La Grande, Oregon. .
