Andrew Taylor bull.- ot Kirksville, Mo., the founder of Osteopathy, has polled a remarkable vote in the recent test made by The Independent, of New York, which ranks as one of the leaders among our more thoughtful magazmee. The Independent was so impressed by the more than 2C.000 votes cast for Dr. Still that it came to the conclusion that Os teopathy, never hitherto discussed by the large magazine because of ' prejudice, should have a bearing. Dr. Still himself was persuaded to furnish an article on "The Principles of Osteopathy." It ap peared in The Independent of November 9th, and a large part of it is reprinted in the pages immediately following. It was replied to one week later by James J. Walsh, M. D Ph. D. of the New York Polyclinic School for Graduates ' in MVdi-' cine. Dr. Walsh's arguments are revjw ed in this ' issue in the article entitled "Criticism Soon Confounded." ' For the benefit of those not familiar with the test made by The Independent. we quote its own note introductory to Dr. Still's contribution: Details Of The Contest . "Nine months ago we called ettentioo to the fact that no American has yet re ceived one of the five prizes of $40,000 each, which are annually awarded by the Nobel Foundation of Sweden to the men who have made the most important dis coveries m chemistry, physics, physiology a m 'ARbs' " D. This naturally raised the interests g question whether we have in this country men sufficiently great to rank with ti twenty-four Europeans who have receiv ed these awards, and we asked our read ers to nominate those among our Amer ican scientisis. authors and peace-makers whom they considered most worthy of this honor." Other Candidates Under "Snowed The Independent notes further that votes poured in so fast for Dr. Still, the American most deserving of the Nobel prize for discoveries in physiology and medicine, that all the other candidates were soon "snowed under." - In its issue of November 23d The Inde- dependent finally announced the vote, showing that the enthusiastic friends of Osteopathy had sent in more than 20.- 000 votes for the candidate. The number received by each of the other candidates in the field of physiology and medicine was absolutely insignificant m compar ison; and the vote of Dr. Still was also vastly in excess of that received by any other candidate for any of the other prizes. -Dr-StiH America's Choke Dr. Still will therefore be recommended as the American candidate for the Nobel prize; and if all of the enthusiastic people who have been cured by Osteopathy could tell their stories he would undoubt edly get it There is a spirit of liberality in Sweden, too, which augurs well for 'the American candidate; but as the Stockholm Com' mission is of course not free from preju dices natural to long year of traditional mtdioine giving; and. if it awards the prize to Dr. Still, will give signal proof of its ability to throw prejudices aside and recognize the new tnat is more Worth tun the old.
