The growing of fruits is a permanent
business orchards and vineyards are
inheritable "and pass, with productive
capacity increased by age, from genera
tion to generation.
All classes and vocations in Union
county are interested in the future de
velopment of the fruit industry in Union
county, and it is hoped our people will
realize the opportunity offered them by
the assemblage of expert fruit growers
at this place, in January and do all that
can possibly be done to make the meeting
a large and interesting one.
The citizens on the north side of the
track are proud of the new school house
now in course of construction and they
have a right to be. ' ' -
It does not always pay to teach people
the way to remedy their errors. The
New York bank clerk who gave a practi
cat demonstration of the way high finan
ciers can be swindled, has been sentenced
to jail for nearly two years. The bankers
failed to appreciate his intentions. Tele

THE FRUIT CONVENTION
It Is to be hoped that the people of
Union county will do all In IKeir power to
make the convention of fruit growers
which is to assemble in La Grande' on
January. 3d, 4th and 6th. one that will
fully represent the present and future
fruit industry of Union county.
The fruit Industry of this county is
among the largest now with possibilities
for enlargement equaled fcy no other. In
1900 there were 161,781 apple trees
growing and bearing in Union county, t
number exceeded by but six of the 34
counties in the state. The same year
there ware 18.325 bearing cherry trees
12,022 peaches and nectarines, 16,727
pears, 69.792 plums and prunes of bear
ing age m Union county; '- The value ol
the fruit crop of all kinds In Union countv
in 1900 was $44,366, " the wheat crop
that year harvested in Union county was
216,640 bushels which at 70 cents a
bushel was worth $160,948 or but little
more than three times as much as the
fruit crop. The products of the forests
lumber, cord wood, ties and teletrraDh
iMjoles in Union county that year were
$66,099, but $21,733 more than the
fruit crop.
When it is borne in mind that the fruit
industry is among the youngest enter
prises in the county, and that already 1
fairly ranks third on the Est, its impor
tance may be estimated. In this connec
tion it is - well to remember that both
wheat and forest are short lived indust
ries in any locality. It takes a forest tree
a century or more to be a profitable pro
ducer of lumber, and when 'the ai has
despoiled a forest, impatient American.
will not sit down and wait a hundred
years for a second crop on the same
ground but the mill is moved and the

at the federal judge who has made

It is outrageous that such distortion of
justice should occur. If that same judge
had. been called upon to sentence some
petty criminal he would have imposed a
penalty many times as severe, but these
rich offenders who have defied the
government and put it to enormous ex
pense are let off with practically no
punishment at alL '
