L D. in his article herein mentioned
explains this marvel by informing us that
the real journal of Lewis and Clark has
never been printed. The reading world
has only been permitted to look upon the
lifeless fragment 'the pedantry of one
hundred years ago palmed off upon the
public. The real journal was killed by
pedantry.
There was a time when Union county
was chiefly noted for its stock business.
Latter the , wheat crop commanded the
respect of the outside world. A few

was discovered that Unicn county was a
great producer of lumber, and that the
dairy business was of considerable im

The Observer feels very thankful for
the March and June, 1905, numbers o
the Quarterly of The Oregon Historical
Society, published at Portland. Each
number is full of interesting reading,
descriptive of the men and women who
labored in Oregon in the olden days, and
of the conditions In old Oregon when
white people were few and conveniences.

article in the March number by Reuben
D. Thwaites, L. L. D. giving an account of
the difficulties in getting the Lewis
and Clark journal published . and of the
manner of its editing is worth reading, as
a good illustration, not so much of con
ditions of the wild west that one hundred
years ago began at the base of the
Alleghany mountains, thence west to the
Pacific, as of the pedantic ordeal the
journal, as written by Lewis and Clark
had to pass through before it was put in
shape, according to the opinion of th
editors, fit for publication.
' Lewis and Clark each kept a daily
journal of the entire trip to and from the
Pacific coast and when the editors, there
were several of them, put these journals
on their dissecting table and went at it
with their blue pencils and worked for
several years on them, they struck out
many descriptive paragraphs and ac
counts of incidents because in their
scholarly opinion they were wanting in
classio dignity. They cut out nearly
everything of personal feeling or individ
ual impressions of the rush of unnamed
rivers, the roar of plunging water falls
that no white men's eyes had ever1 before
looked upon or their ears ever, heard.
They struck out all notes of a scientific
character about the new plants and
vegetable growth, of the strange animals
found In the unexplored wilds.
