JERRY SIMPSON The death of Jerry Simpson aud the numerous references made to him as "Sockless Jerry" recalls a custom that has long prevailed of attempting to bring western man ini fixing a derogatory nickname to - M them. The Tories in the col onies thought to eliminate Washington b calling him baeatkin colonel but they changed their smile at Yorktown, Jackson's political enemies to mske him appear ridiculous to the people in the older states represented him as carrying a big hickory club at "host races" snd shooting matches, which he was ever ready to use to secure purses and turkeys whether won or not for his friends, and they dubbed him 01d Hickory'. The secessionists, pro-slavery aristocrats and their tools thought they had forever closed the door to the president's room in thn national capitol when they represented Lincoln . as au igaorant rail splitter. But the aristocratic Lee when he handed his sword to Lincoln's general' at Appomattox found that if be had split rails and never attended college he was wise and strong enough to pre vent the high toned southern chivalry from splitting the Union. The bankers and money loan- ers in slick bats and silken stockings felt that when they had got the people to believe that Jerry Simpson wore no socks by calling him ''Sockless Jerry" they had silenced his ongue, but when he appeared in congress they found him a match for their brightest cham pains iu debate. The older states, it seems will never learn that there is logic, wisdom, courage and eulture ' in the west snd that the people who have carried civilisation westward were themselves civil ised. The western people are much to blame for this by the want of resentment they have always shown to the literature of the east that persists in de scribing the people of the west as a set of ignoramuses who being incapable of coping with the cultured intelligence of the east, fled to the obscurity of the western forests or the trackless prairies, where the bounties of spontaneous nature would satisfy their hunger and the skins of wild animals supply them with clothing. The news that Europe's granaries are almost bare will be hailed with joy by the West ern farmer as this will surely bring up the price of his wheat H..
