Every body seemed full of neighborly feeling, a smile of contented glalnesa was on every face, and the glad band of friendship un chilled by conventionality was ever ready for a friendly grasp." It . may be safely siid, and proved by what is taking place politically in ehurch nfflllia tions, in society and among commercial interests all over the and today, that as a people the Americans were never in as good . a humor as now. And while this is true, things that are now goiog on all over the and show clearly that as a people we never wer in as dtep earnest as now in having all things, national, state, county and city conducted with honesty, openess aud for the best interest of all. No place is so high that it is a safe refuge for the wrong doer. No man is so powerful that be can defy the law and break it with Bsfety. The grand jurys have laid aside the traditional whitewash brush to use on the crimes of the rich ' and great, but with a manly vigor scrutinize the acts of those in high places that is astonishing to the class of men who have recently been indioU ed as law breakers. Petty jurys respontive to tbe national im pulse and earnest demand for "a square deal" are convicting a class of law breakers that have heretofore been considered immune from the penalities of their crimes. The people with an earnestnes, incomprehensi ble to the grafters end manipu lators of crafty sobemes to gain illegal wealth, are showing to A MATTER OF HEALTH -A , Absolatcly Pure IAS L'O SUBSTITUTE the world that a free people has the nerve and virtue to enforce their own lawt. This atitude of the American people has silenced for all time tbe croaking of des potism and aristocracy, "that the people have neither the capacity nor virtue for self government. Baker City is to have a lecture course this fall and winter. La Grande should do likewise. The people always win out after a while.. The result of the present life insurance scandlea cannot but help cheapen insur ance after the debris has been cleared away.' " Eastern Oregon is a ripe field for some strong denomination to found a university and there is no better location possible than . La Grande., We . should keep this in view and be ready when tbe opportunity arrives. .
