A LAW ABIDING PEOPLE In the three trials, in the U 8 court at Portland, Oregon of Congressman Williamsou and his co-defendants out of the thirty-six jurors who sat in the cases tfeuty eight voted for con viction and eight for acquittal. That is in the three trials 77 -9 per cent of the jurymen were lor conviction and 22 2-9 per cent voted for acquittal. In the two trials that resulted in hong juries of the ' 24 jurors 16 were for conviction and 8 for cquittal, or 66 er cent for conviction and 83 1 per cent for acquittal. In the last trial the 12 jurors were unanimous for conviction. Taking the jurymen as a measure or public opinion 77 9 per cent of the people of Oregon stand with the admin istration of President By. s velt in his efforts to enforce the U S land laws and pnniih viola tions thereof, and 22 2-9 per cent are not so fully in sympa thy therewith as to be willing to ats'ut in enforcing the same When the great respect for, and high confidence in which the people of Oregon have heietolo.-e evinced for the de ienuanla in t tie ease are con sidered, this showing is remark aWle and proves without doubt that the people of Oregon are at heart a la abidiug people sad a law enforcing people. While 11 deeply regret that the de fendants did that which was wrong yet 00 troe lover of the state and its good name cm re gret that the jury iu the last trial dm its duly, tnougu a pain ful oue. STANDS f.OH THE PEOPLE Without intentionally mean ing to do it, President Roose velt has iu one sentence shown whertij lies his great popularity with ... the American people Writing to Senator ileyburu of Idaho last J liie snd upholding tlie government policy in regard to the establishment af forest reserves, be said: "Now, when I can properly pay heed to political matters 1 will do so, but I will not for out hi meot consent to sacrifice the interests ol the pe.-ple as s who'e to the real interests of auyiu dividual or any political fac tion." There is a stinging rebuke in these words, not only tiHue senator to whoine they were. a I- dressed, but to thstlare c'.is-' 1 ! piliticians who use pnblio office for' personal ends, l'reridrut Roosevelt had no idea, probably at the time he wrote that letter that it would have the publicity I now given to it It was not ' ... . written tO affect PUbl C Sent: I auaus, uvr was iu puuiicauon needed t iucrtase esteem for many - things that give n in s'ght into the real character of 1 ha president. Spokeman Re view. PRICE OF SCHOOL LAND Idaho by law fixes the lowest price that arhool Land, 16la end SG:h section ia each towuihip, can be sold in that sUte is lea dollars per acre. This is fonr tmes higher than any school land in Oregon is soil at by the state. School land in Oiegoo is just as good, and should bring as much money per acre, into the irredacible school fund ts an acre in Idaho and would if our legislature would so say.
