DID GOOD WORK The Nationul Irrigation Con gress that just closed a session at Portland did much valuable work for the cause of irrigation. One of the greatest things it accomplished was to snow under the land grabbers proposition tbat the congress of the United State ajaend . the present law, which provides that the govern taant will furnish water to no one for more than one hundred sixty acres. The proposed mend men t, if made, will change the purpose of the law which is to provide homes foi the many, into a contrivance to make the holders of Urge tracts of land acquired by wagon road companies, for touds tbey never built tu Eastern Oregon, ricb. e - nd purchasers of vast tracts of realy desert lands, under the swamp land acts,, wealthy by reason of the water the govern inent will at great expense cou- dnct on it. ABOUT INDIANS There were 263,233 Indians n the u o on reservations iii 903. The reservations that year in the aggregate had sn area of 117,420 sqiare miles. n 1903 there were, according to the Anuual Report of the Com missioner of Indian, Affairs, 3,924 Indians iu Oregon occupy ing reservations tbat in tb aggregate coyer Z,)il tquare miles. There is no reliable datta from which any satisfactory conclusion can be drawn as to the number of Indians in Amer ioa when discovered by Colum bus in 1492. Dr Robert Brown is quoted iu the Chambers Ea oyoloj iu iia, edition of 1879, as giving some approximate statis tics which give the total Indian population of North Aineric about a century ago at .110,000 The geueral notion of the num ber of Indians is doub'.less an exaggerated one, as will be man ifest from a close readiug of the journals and notes of early ex plorers, such as Catliu, Bonne ville, George Rogers Clark aui his brother William wbo we ar so appropiately honoring today. Freemont, Kit Carson, Dau Boone and Dr Whitman. Any one who will recall the long marches these explorers mad between camps and . the din I G. L FOWLER Truck and, Transfer Wood nd Coal Phone 1611 All order given prompt attantiou. trails tbey bad to follow from one village to anotber will nee tbat there never could have been "the countless hordes of savagea" tbat imaginative writers htve peopled the webt with. The general beliel that the Indian race is fiat decreeing is not born out by observation or count. lu 1890 there were 243,524 Itidiaus on reservations iu the United Stales, and in 1903 there were 263,233 a gain in thirteen years of 19,709. President Itoosevelt is receiv ing congratulations from all over the world for bis active part in the peace negotiations that have resulted ia two of the leading nations of the world Uy lug down their arms.
