THAT CITY PARK , No mtre do you bear a word of that city park that was pur cbaied some years ego . by the ladies of the city. What has become of il? Surely the citl iena of this city thould com mence to take an interest iu snob an important matter and take some action- It will take years to grow trees and prepare grounds for the entertainment and pleat ure of both the citizens of tbe city and strangers who visit n, but a start must be made some time. Now is as good a time to make that start as any. We suggest that this fall the city fathers take an interest iu the park matter and the citizens of tbe city too, for that matter, and set nut a lot of trees aud then next year prepare lawns This will of course require water but the city cau well afford to donate that to assist in the up. building of a pleasure spot. The bcotion purchased is not too far out. , Ootid sidewalks ould soon be laid to it by the adjoining property owners on the streett leading to it and tbe walk would only be a pleasant stroll. ' Let all take an interest m this matter and start to make a place where a tired visitor to our city may sit down and rest in tbe shade or where on Sun day afternoon our citizens may Bod a resting place on a hot day. It would be a good change if the American voter would full into the habit of taking more interest iu what the state, county or nation is doing or prapojes to do, than iu who holds the offices. The people of Oregon are- just now talking and guessing far more about who will be appoint ed U S judge for Oregon, an ofbee that concerns very few, ibau about county roads that effect the I lotne lifd of every man woman and child in the stale. . No prudent man would turn his property over to be managed by his employees, and nay no more attention to it, only to give friends good positions with fat salaries which he must pay, without auy consideration as to the need or value of the service rendered or of the way it is per formed. A citizen who does (hit. G. E. FOWLER Truck and, Transfer Wood and Coal . Phone 1611 All order given prompt aiUutiou. in regard to affairs of county, stale or nation and pays no at tention thereto save to express a prefeience for officers, em ployees of the public, is derelict in his duty for he is one of the owners aud shirks paying at tention to his nwu business. OREGON SCHOOLS In 1002 Oregon bad 112,047 children from five to , eighteen years of age and that year ex pended 1 1,802,227 for her public schools beiog $16 08 per child. The same year Washington on our north had. 156,270 children fmm five to eighteen years ot ateand her total expenditure for public schools that year was $2,805,455 being $17 95 per child and one dollar and eiguty seven cents per child more than Oregon pai J. Idaho on our east in 1902 had 51,700 children of from five to eighteen years of age and that year expended . for her public schools , bo- ing $13.33 per child. California on our south in 19C2 had 351, 600 children from five to eigh teen years of age and expended that year $7,613,708 for her public schools being five dollars per child more than Oregon ex pended that year. It is almost cruelty, to ani mals the way the President is delaying the appointment of tbe federal judgeship in this state, especially afttr it was supposed to have been fixed ever so many days ago.
