ATTOliN EYS-AT-LAW Qftlot In Ralston Bulldlug Pbona iOjs La Urande, Or. When the chemist, Ruthford, 133 years ago, emerged from his studio, filled with pots, cruci bles, blowpipes and mysterious compounds that were regarded by the common people of Eog- lauu as tue unettjaa love ui an impractible recluse, and an nounced that he had discovered another element in the makeup of the material world, they paid no attention to it, not deeming it worthy of their notice. They saw in this new stuff witheut taste, color or odor nothing that could possibly assist them in f 1! je ' . . a providing iooa. doming or shelter for themselves or fam ilies. So far as thoy could see, it looked just like air. lis long Greek name had no significance to them and was regarded only as a device of the learned to keep them from knowing any. thing about it, This stuff composes four fifths of the air we breath and ia called nitrogen. You cannot open a volume on animal or vegetable growth or decay but the word is found ou most every page, for it has been found by actual test that nitrogen forma the most important constituents of the solids and fluids of the animal body, and also in many kinds of vegetables. This faot being made known, farmers who are raising children or growing or keeping domestic animals have become interested in nitrogen, a knowledge of which enables him to select and provide the most nutritious food for their families or animals, for food that does not contain some compound of nitrogen is almost valueless in the production of bone, mus cle h,sir, nails, horns ot hoofs. Plants that contain the largest quantity of nitrogen are not only more valuable for food but also for fertilizing the gro-.iud. It is because clover and all the bean or pod bearing class of plants contain so much nitrogen that they are so highly esteemed in fertilizing worn out farms and restoring them to productiven es Late experiments by a pack ing house iu California have shown that to place ripetruitin an air tight vessel and then by au air pump draw out all the air and after filling the vecum with nitrogen gass and seal it up that the fruit will keep without change in taste, or fermenting for an indefinite length of time. This is a very important dis covery and one that bids fair to be of vast benefit to fruit grow ers as it will enable them to ship ripe, eatable fruit or berries for thousands of miles where they ean be kept as fresh and palate- able as when plucked from the tree, for a long time. Thus it has come to pass that the discovery of nitrogen which farmers, fruit (growers and con sumers, in 1772 thought of no consequence to them was in re ality the unsealiug of one of natures great secrets that in 1905 ed fields, rear larger and strong er domestic animals and Bhip fruits to customers thousands of miles from the orchards as fresh, fragrant and luscious as when gathered. The curio that the farmers of 133 years ago laugh ed at as a useless toy, today is considered an indespensible element in keeping perannual fertility in their fields and flavor in their fruits. , The 'plaything has changed from curio to a use.
