cabinet today resigned. The com

IS IN DISTRESS

Eureka Cal July 25 A large passen
ger steamer, whose name has nor yet
been learned. Is In distress a quarter
of a mile North of here. The passen
gers are being taken off in small boats
and tags have gone to her relief .

tain and crew deserting her, an un
known steamer, believed to be a col
lier from tbe North to San Francisco,
is ashore at Cape Mendooine. A tug
and lite saving , orew left this
morning in response to a message from
the capo at U am. It is stated that
three small boats have been lannohed
from the steamer and the men are at
tempting to reach . the light ship
stationed ot toe Cape. The vessel
grounded Is up on the beach and in no
danger of going to pieces. Th steam
er must have lost her coarse in a fog
daring the night. ;v
Farewell Banquet
The O A K and, WK U met In joint
session 8atorday afternoon. After the

who leaves in a few days for her new

received merited applause. Mrs Lyle
delighted all with one other choice
selections and all joined In singing
America. Miss Mary Tait sang In her
pleasing style the "Gem of tbe Ooean",
followed by an encore 'My Little
Georgia Coon". Both were highly
appreciated. After a few remarks from
the visitors our very worthy President,
Mrs . Kilpatrio, closed the meeting
Then the farewells were spoken and
all returned borne with a new page in
memory's book of pleasures.

a machinist, by name A F Nelson, the
only snrvivor ei the engineers. It will
be remembered that Capt Young in his
rrport on the trip made from Honolulu
to San Diego stated to admiral Good
rich that the boilers were not safe
with a pressure exceeding 130 to 135
pounds. Nelson was in charge of the
engines when the ship was ' about to
leave and says: "I kept a careful
watch of tbe steam gunge pressure: It
went to 140, then dropped back to 130
and the engines weie turned over onoej
the total pressure then was up exactly
to 133, and it was at that figure the
moment when the explosion occurred
SUPPLY SHIPS ARRIVES
The supply ship Iris arrived this
morning from Mare Island with three
sets of diving apparatni and four men
from the submarine service to be em
ployed as divers. Tbey will go down
to inspect the plates of the Benning
ton and determine tbe advisability of
repairs.- Tbe officer now believe that
the ship can . be repaired No new
deaths of the victims ot tbe disaster
have been reported today, but three of
the injured are in a very serious condl
