We would not be sur prised if political importance should be attached to it by some European diplomats, although the occasion was entirely with out connection with internation al politics. ; The American rep resentatives went to - Paris to receive the earthly remains of Admiral Paul Jones. The honor bestowed upon bur sailors by the French was aa expression of the genuine friendship, the citizens of " one ' great republic naturally entertain for those cf another. Even the soul-stirring strains of the Marseillaise should not inspire fear in any quarter. The , ceremonies at tending; the delivery of the re mains to the Americans were very impressive and the occa sion was roost happily chosen for an exchange of compliments BOILED DOWN . Some one described political economy as "the dismal science" This is in view of the prolix and pedantio style of most writers on political economy, a deserved epithet Take Adam Smith, . the recogn'zed ablest author on political economy and, afier wading for hours through his prosey definitions of "values" and compensations and money, cheerful indued inmt be your disposition, if a strong case of blues has not taken . possession of you, aud you lay cowu the ponderous volume with a chilly feeling and belief that all hu man effort is but a helpless fol lowing of .t blind, itisfusiate heartless destiny that humau will canuot influence, aud over which heart and sentiment hss no away This dreariness comes because of the failure of the author to recognise the prime and Universal motive of human effort, the purpose to bo accom plished by labor which on being boiled down, and reduced to the last anulyf is is to supply the home wi'h the nccrsoiies and comforts of life. The home family, is the unit of the state, , and all just Governments are organized for the protection of the homes therein, and all laws , are or should be considered with reference to the effect their enforcement will have on . the home life of the people. ; CUBA'S PROGRESS The official report of the mosrcompleto disappearance of yellow fever from Cuba 'since the liberation of the island frvm Spanish rule and the inaugura tion of American sauitary rneth ods is peculiarly ctincid nt with comment by tha E?pana Econ- omica by Financier, published in Madrid, in aa article discuss ing the progress ma ie by Cuba in her industries, commerce, public works,, administration, finance, system af public schools railways . and . sanitation. . The article contrasts the present im proved situationwith that prei vailing under the old Spanisji regime. It is ( shown that in dependence has quadrupled tbe number of primary public schools, the increase being par ticularly marked in the rural districts. ' Wagon roads had to be con structed on the island to make connection 'between points f, production and points of ship ment. For this purpose toe republic is spending millions;', the Spanish administration Jtft the work to the producer's ma chete. Commerce ! between apain and i)uDa nas ot late been somewhat expanded. I i "Yea nothing has . been done' by our government," 'says the Madrid paper, "toward a com mercial treaty which might se cure our future trde . with th island." The paper goes on to say: The yellow fever was a chronio reproach to our colonial admin-istration.- A few months of hygiene and sanitation during the American . intervention did more for the island than the power of Spair had done in four centuries." This is a tribute from Spain which is none the less gratifying though it is but the expression of a solf evident fact. The Cuban people are to be complimented upon carrying forward the work begun by the mericanc, and the American people can congratulate them selves not only on .mating Cuba free, but on giving , her such a s;ood start before hang ing over the reins of govern men. never receive it if we never for it. ask Mr. C W Ponte.
