: CUiiens .of this city and
county should not loose sight of
the fact that it was through the
efforts of the La Grande Com
mercial Club thst the officers of
tne National Good Road Associa
tioa were brought to this city
and it was also through their
elToats that the meeting of the
Association in this city was
made the sucpess it certainly
was. The .work accomplished
'by the La Gande Commercial
iClub and the Good Roads Aa
- aociation not simply tor a day,
' but will be for all the time.
. The Members of the National
Good Road Association have
; come and gone, but ( the results
of their visit will be lasting and
it is hoped that, by the time
they visit this county again,
there will be a number of mo
dern roads visable which will be
as monuments testifying to the
virtue of the cause in which
; tney labor. It was evident from
- the interest taken by our citi
zens that we are fully aware of
the necessity of good roads, and
it is a certainity that within a
very short time real scientific
road making will take place of
the patch up system now in use
in this county.
jing, the party will divide ant
send detachment - back to
headquarters for fresh supplier,
which will be found on. the
route by the returning explor
ers, after they have reached the
Pole. Iu case all goes as hoped
for, the members of the expedi
tion, hoe lurk it will bave
been to reach the pole, will be
returning to headquarters and
the abip next May. The Roonwl
velt will then be broken out of
ice in July or August, txplosives
being used to free her if neces
sary, and she will return some
lime in the fall of 1906. If how
ever, the obstacle most feared
presents itself and iee-pack pre
vents the Roosevelt from resell
ing Grant land this summer the
wiater will be spent as far north
as it is possible to get the ship
and an effort will be male to
obtain the desired ' location a
year later.- The dash for the
pole will then he also delayed a
year.
Commander Peary, although
reported as having admitted tb
possibility of finding laud at th
Pole, is said to be of the opinio:
that no land will be found ther
but that the journey from Grau
land will have to be made ove
the frozen ocean.' If there is n
and there, there will be no oc
t
cieion for a dispute as to the
ownership.

' PEARY'S PLANS
According to the published
full accounts of Commander
Peary's plan for reaching y the
. North Pole, ou the expedition
' that is to start this month, he
has excellent chances of reach
ing the goal before returning to
civilization again. His ship is
especially coustructe-l and
equipped for the voyage, and his
long experience in the Arctic
will enable him to proceed with
deliberation and an intelligent
understanding of the difficul
ties to I e eucotuiteied. lie has
already been witbi t 895 miles
of the Pole, nd his chauces of
coveriug the remainiug distance
are good.
The explorer will endeavor to
force his ship, Roosevelt, up
through Smith sound on the
northwest of Greenland and
tbiouh KobP8on channel, mak
ing if possible, permanent bend
quarters on the north shore of
Grant laud. From here the
distance to the Pole is less than
500 miles. The journey from
this point, northward, will com
mence next February, with the
first appearance of . the Arctio
day. The expedition will start
out with, say, 12 men, and suf
ficient provisions, and as the
journey northward is progress
