So pr Ih CHINESE ARE SULLEN The Commercial Guilds in China are hostile because of tha treatment which they alitg", merchant receive in the United States Their chief cause - of dissatisfaction is, that under an' interpretation of our Chinese exclusion' law, many Chinese merchants, whose business re- u oiineu States, are not permitted to enter the United States. The attention of the President hav ing been called to this matter, he is having the complaint of the China merchants inquired into. The merchants of China are using their influence with the people of China to have them resent this treatment from Americans by refusing to pur chase, use or in any , way have anything to do with any article of American make, or production Should these Chinese mer chants succeed and induce . the people of the China, to boycott American products of farm and factory our trade with the Chinese Empirewith t' its area of 1,532,420 square , miles and in the ' aggregate ; 407,253,000 people will cease. In 1902 China imported from foreign lands 1198,364,000 worth' of staff, and the same year exported ' ' $134,720,000 worth of thiugs. That year 1902, the people of the United States exported to the Chiuet-e Empire goods wares and merch andise to the value of $24,722. 906 and imported therefrom tuffs valued at $21,055,830 showing a balance of trade in our favor of $3,667,076. For the nine months ending with March 1905 our imports from the Chinese Empire amounted to $20,713,420, and our exports to were $33,841,401 making the balance of trade in our favor, for the nine months aggregate $12,602,990. The abeve is the official show, iug made by the books in the U S Treasury Department cull ed by the Observer from the statistical abstract of the United States, a book of 650 pugts pub lished by the U S Depar moot of Commerce mid Labor in 1903 and the Monthly Summary of Commerce and Fin nice of the United States for March 1905 published by the U S Bureau of statistics from which it will appear that our trade with China is large and growing. Hawaii has no snakes and does not propose to have the reptiles introduced. Some day , go a box of rattlers were takei there for exhibition in the zoo. The people objected, to their be ing landed and before the dis pute was fettled the snakes had 11 been killed in the custon house. That they thought wat do doubt better than running the risk of their getting loos and then depending upon souii modern Sr Patrick to expe them. itueaianouicials are busy ex plaining that the words used "in a portion of the publication in the Gazette were incorrect, that they were not'the same as the. language nsed in the communi cation to the president, slight mistakes haviog crept in. The prerident and the Russian au thorities are the only ones who know what the facts aTe, but it does not seemlikely" the ' latter would assert such en error had occurred it tney knew - the re futation of their statement was in the hands of the president. The proper place to find out whether' a 'country is ; wisely ruled, is to examine the " homes of the common people, and. not the palaces of the. rulers,' or mansidue of the rich.
