BIG ARMIES The great hosts that stand ib battle arrsy in Manchutia males it pertiuent to recall that the United States in times past has pat some goodly sixei arm ies in the field as appears from the muster rolls filed in Wanh- . lutionary war, which began with the battle of Lexiugton April 19, 1775 and ended April 11, 1783, there were enrolled in M( the army and navy 309,791 names allowing for reinlistments it is estimated that 184,038 in dividuals did service iu that war on land and sea. . , In the war with England the rolls show the names of 676,622 soldiers and seamen from the beginning, June 18, 1812 to the v end, August 19 1814, and after e a! allowing lor names duplicated by different enlistments the number of individuals that did service is estimated at 286,730. War with Mexico began April 24, 1846 and ended May 30, 1848 during which the rolls show the names of 112,230 soldiers and seamen. The estimate for individuals that served are plac ed at 78,718. In the war of the Rebellion the rolls of the land and sea forces show 2,778,304 names, and the estimated number of individuals is 2,213,363. In the war with Spain that lasted from April 21, 1898 to April 11, 1899 there were 812, 523 names enrolled and 312,000 individuals engaged.
