It would be stupendous folly if we At A maI IKa 1 Aaiain a ti vK f by the gigautic failure of French capitalists on this very under taking. ' Evidently President Roosevelt his set his firm jaw on a determination - that the canal mutt be constiucted hon estly, economically and well . Extravagance in the purchase of supplies would probably be the opening wedge to v extravagance i i i i t an aiong me uae, ana mus me expeuse oi uiggiug iut vauai, which at the very lowest must be gigantic, could easily be car ried to figures that' would make the enterpris6 unprofitable and that might precipitate the United States into a ' runious financial panic. The canal is great international improve ment and it would be an act of folly to allow it to be jeopardiz ed or wrecked by a sense ol misguided devotion to the ound national principle of pro tection. It aan not be doubted that on this project the big manufacturing concerus of the United States can profitably meet the competition of foreigu firms. ' In othtr words, we can build' this canal economically and build it with American material, but we can not build it economically if we allow American combines to charge any price their greed may de mand. Spokanesman Review. John D Rockefeller is quoted as saying that the recent dis cussion over his gift for missions has set him to thinking about better way of aiding church and philautropie work. Drop a Una, naming work, and I wit give the right prioe. There are some Portland peo ple interested of course, who deny that the Portland hogs, so called, are jumping op the prices about double on sleeping apsrU meats in the metropolis in view of the forth coming Lewis and Clark Fair and the consequent crowded condition of the city, but there are other" who are honest enough to admit that right at the present moment the leadiug hotels and down town : rooming houses are even today a .a . a cnarging more tnan tueir re gular prices for their sleeping rooms. Railroad companies, the fair management and the Portland Service company and other in stitutions have madit efforts to prevent such a contingency but have net been able to control the situation and Baker City people are not the only Oregon- i&ns Who have made up their minds to stay at home it they have to be cinched in their own leading city upon an occasion o this kind.
