GRAND RECEPTION
TO CONDUCTORS
Thlt morning, shortly before elet en

members of tbe Order of Railway Con
ductors to tbe 30tb session ol the
Rational convention at Portland, ar
rived in thti city. Never in the his
tory of La Grande bat the been hon
ored by a visit ol ao many railroad

to the train when it reaobed here, and
such a lot of good looking, bappy and
Jovial conductors, with their wives.
daughters and eweetheartt, waa never
before greeted by tbe hospitable
people of La Grande. , There were
about five hundred on tbe train when
it reaehod here, and eaoh and every
souvenir from tbe La Grande Division
No 350 of tbe Order of Railway Con.
doctors. The visitor teemed to thor
oughly appreciate tbe courtesies that
were extended to them by the mem
beri ol this order, as well as the grand
reception at the depot by the citizens.
The train stopped here fifteen minutes
and during that time the La , Grande
Band was filliug the air with delight-,
lot musio, bile thoee unable to en
tertain in this manner were extend
ing the glad hand, showing the visi
tors the exhibit ball, and telling them
of the wonders of onr country.
Hundreds of La Grande citizens,
men, women and children, thronged
the platforms of the depot and tbe
surrounding grounds to meet and
give welcome to tbe pauiog visitors.
Tbe engine pulling the train which,
was No 183 oat ot tbe La Grande yards,
waa beautifully and artistically decor
ated by Mr K M Eversole, of the O R
AN and Mr J Heugheo. That their
efforta'were crowned with success waa
proven by the appearance 61 the engine.
On the head end was two of the Lewis
and Clark piotures fixed in a "V"
shape, while on the sides of the tank
were pictures ot the sunset railway
scene with Portland at the end of the
track-in the far distance. H Cool
idge did the painting.
About tbe. engine and on the cab
were many artistically arranged pieces
of bnnting with tbe colors of the
order, red, white and green. At least
a hundred dollars was spent in the
deooratlon of the engine, betide the;
Immense expense of purohaalng badges,
flowers end ciirara for tbe visitors.
This expense was all born by the di
vision at this place, and for it all
they deserve great credit. They have
done themselves proud, at well as
asalated the city In making a good and
favorable impression on tbe visitors.
Tbe engine palling the train left the
yards here laat nlgbu-and went to
Huntington, where aha waa this morn
log attached to the epecial train to pnll
it to Portland. Engineer John 8bea,
of thla city, pulled the train from
Huntington to Umatilla, and Mr frank
Roohland of this olty was fireman to
that point, where both will be relieved.
Condaotor Kelsey will have charge of
the train all the way to Portland . .
A delegation from this place went
to Huntington to meet the visitors but

La Grande Won
In tbe Knights of Pythias team con
test which took place Saturday even
ing between the Enterprise, Elgin and
La Grande teama, La Grande won
first honors, Elgin, . eeoond. The
Judges however In tleir markings
found little difference, aa ahown by
their report.' After Ithe contest the
Enighta and members of tbe Rathbon
Sistera enjoyed the banquet in tbe
Commercial Ciob. where covers for
one hundred and fifty were spread,
and toasts enjoyed.
The visiting Knights appreciated
the oourtesien extended by their La
Grande brethen, and while not return
ing with their trophies ot victory, re
turned after having oneot the finest
. times in their lives..

Chicago May 8 Following a lull In
the violenoe of the strike on Sunday,
tbe probabilities for more trouble be
came apparent this moroing when it
waa declared that the big houses
would attempt to resume their regular
operations. The employers have ask
ed the polioe for protection for twelve
hundred wagons which tbey expect to
send out today. The employers of tbe
teaming company will also attempt to
operate seven hundred wagons nnder
tbe usual strong guards. Assistant
chief Seblenter will take personal
oharge of tbe police today. He inti
mates that there will be no further
alliance with the disorderly element
or tbe crowds which follow the wa
gons. Tbe mayor's commission to
investigate stnke began this morning,
under the leadership of Prof. Graham
Taylor, but it is not expected tbst
tbe committee will be ready to report
before the end of the week
STRIKE BREAKERS LEAVE
It is reported at polioe headquarters
that several hundred strike breakers
returned to Ht Louis Sunday,' declar
ing that, they had enough of the
ttrennont life In Chicago. Emil
Ktaber, a anion teamster, was shot
and aerionaly wounded by three men
in a quarrel over the strike, st Cly
burn and Orobard streets this morn
ing. ' . - V '

would be considered. In a statement,
president Shea, of the teamsters, de
clared that the large firms were not
doing more than tan per cent of their
ordinary business, owing to thuir in
ability to secure competent help. He
reiterated tbe offer of the onions to
submit the difficulty to arbitration. .

Tbe field meet last Saturday be
tween tbe La Grande and Union High
Schools resulted la a victory as far as
points go, for the Union team, a the
final score stood seventy two ti forty
four in their favor. Tbe basket ball
game resulted in a victory for the La
Grande girls, and had it not bee., for
them the La Grande side of tbe score
would have been even smaller.
; Game was called at ten thirty, and
tbe girls lined up on tbe greeo for the
great struggle. The game went swift
and vigorous from start to finish. The
first half closed with La Grande to the
good , and alter a brief rest the battle
royal was on again. The last half was,
it such a thing were possible, even fast
er than the first, and when the official
whistle sounded the game stood live to
ten tn favor of La Grande. . After the
ball game every one took a rest until
one thirty, and then the boys assumed
their aummer clothes and prepared tor
the feats of endurance and skill.

Assistant district Attorney Band for
the purpose ot having Nan Patterson
released on bail or upon ber own re
cognizance.' Band declined to make

tbe Huntington team la composed of
gentlemen, and are hard and good ball
players, For the first two innings it
waa simply a game ot "up to the bat
and out" on both aides. Then the La
Grande team picked up oourage and
got down to basinees and three runs

Grande, and the game was enjoyed to
