The jury In the case of William Mad
darn, charged with the murder of Will
iam Thome at Bourne, on the 20th day
of laat January, announced to the
baliff In charge at 1:30 this morning
that they bad agreed upon a verdict
and, at onoe. Judge White was notified

tbe attorneys. When formal conven
log had been accomplished, ti e verdict
waa read and was iound to be for
aoqutttal. The defendant then greeted
tbe jurors and retiree From one who
professed to know, it was learned that
bat four ballots were taken, tbe major
ity being tor acquittal at the outset.
There was none voting for more than
murder la the second degree npon the
first ballot and these changed to man
slaughter and remained that way until
the final ballot whioh was taken about

The members of the LOB Concert
Band appreciate tbe general response
of tbe public by their attendance laat
evening and those preieut were charm
Ingly entertained. There waa not a
dull moment from tbe opening number
to the close. The band Is a oredit to
the oity and V 8 Bramwell their leader
is certainly entitled to no small oredit
for the proficiency made in so short a
time.
. Tbe entire program, as published in
laat eveninga issue, was presented con
sisting of quartette, duetts, solos and
recitations. Those who were not
missed a rare evenings entertainment.
For Good Roads

who is the Oitgou vioepresident of
the National Good Road association,
u in correspondence with W H Moore
ol St. Louis, president of the associa
tion, regarding tbe datea for holding
the national convention here this
year. The exposition management
has indicated June U to 17 as dates
that would be convenient, and that
are now the only ones in June.
The governor bas been notified by
President Moore that the dates are
satisfactory, and authorized him to
close an arrangement with the ez
position company if a guarantee of
funds for paying tbe expenses of tbe
convention is made at the Portland
end of the line. The governor will
take up the matter witn tbe exposi
tion company and prominent citizens,
and necessary arrangements will be
made. . It is said tbe convention will
bring about 1,500 delegates to Port
land, representing nearly every atiite

The President's Outing

Philip B Stewart, who is arranging
the details of President RooseveU'a
hunting trip in the White river coun
try next month, has received a letter
from 8cietary Loeb stating that there
has btten no change in the President's
plans to visit Colorado.
Mr. Stewart says the president ex
pects to live entirely in tbe open if
the weather, during his visit to Colo
rado, is at all favorable-

Old Actor dies

ryniore, an actor who had been an
inmate of tbe Lon Island Home for
the past six years, died this morning
of paresis. He was tbe father of Miss
Ethel Barry more and Jack Barrymore
both well known actors.
