CWdi of thanks, be pr 11m , TRANSPORTATION COST While the people are very properly giving much thought to what it is costing them to use the great railroad lines in the country, it will be wise on their part to give some serious consideration to what it is coat ing to use the common roads that lead from their farms to the railroad stations. It would be a good idea for every farmer to consult his actual outlays and find' out definitely what it U costing him to move a ton of freight from his farm to the railroad station where the , pro ducts of his farm 'begin their journey to market. The Hon. WD Vandiver of Ohio in a speech ,in Congress published in' the . Congressional Record of March 8, 1905, advo cating national aid in building common roads said: "It costs the American farmer an average of twenty five cents per mile to transport a ton of produce from the field to the railroad . station. It only costs eight cents in Europe. The difference is in the character of the roads." . A little figuring may demon strate that bad roads are costing you a much larger sum yearly than yon suspect t . ... , A fool and his money is soon parted. This applies to news papers as welt as other lines Just as soon as the officers can get their suits made we will have a uniformed police. We are getting there. Senator Mitchell had better not; break with the newspapers of the state just yet. He may need their support before he straightens but his matters with the government and his constituents. Oouncilmen Qardineir is of the opinion that "by the placing of two or three hose carts in different portions of the city with bells it mav cive a better seryice and might possibly be less expensive than a fire alarm system, v He will doubtless "ore- sent it for consideration "at the next council meeting, which will be next Monday: r . There is an abundance of room and aside from the general appearance in a public way, the "beautiful" is no small part in a complete education. Keep your eye on the Com mercial Club.
