Houston Post GOVERNMENT SEEDS Noisy politicians, uatural born kickers and habitual grumblers have for the past fifty years or more had bo much to 6ay in de rision of the efforts tbe general government has been making to place within the knowledge of the American farmers the beat varieties of seed to plant that a very large proportion of" the farmers look upon the distribu tion of seeds by theU S Agricul tural Department s a useless use of public money. What Are the actual facts with regard to the benefits that to aye accrued to the farmers of the United States from the free dis tribution of seeds t them by the general government? The Ob server auswers this question by extracts from a letter from James Wilson Secretary of Agn- culture to the Hon E S Chandler M. C. from Miss., dated Jan 23 1905 and published in tbe Con gressional Recoid of Feb 22nd, 1905. - "The records show that the de partment of Agriculture has been helpful in tbe introduction of many of tbe crops that aie at present considered the tuoet val uable in the Uuited States. Among these crope may be mentioned the Fultz and other varieties of wheat; Chintpe Sor- gum, introduced in- tne early sixties at a coat of about $2,000 and now worth easily many raillious annually to the country; the cow pea, without which tbe southern farmer would be at a Ions for the improvement of his land; the Kaffir corn, the intro duction of which cost the Depart ment not more than $5,000 and of which tbe aunual value at present is estimated at about $20,000,000; Macaroni wheat, on which during the last three years, we have expended about $10,000 and which has enabled the farmers of the arid west to grow crops worth from $6,000, 000 to $7,000,000 on lands on which they could not grow tbe ordinary varieties; Japanese rice, which has been a large factor in the phenominal growth of the rice mduttry in Texas Aud Lou isiana, the Acreage devoted to which has increased from 210,- 396 acres in 1893 to a total of 610,700 acres in 1904, raising the value of the land from be tween a dollar and a dollar and a half per acre to from thirty five to fifty dollars per acre, and the output has been increased from 115,000,000 pounds in 1898 to 65U.UUU.UUU pounds in 1904." From the data given in the Utter it is shown that the cost of all the seed and plant, introduc tion by the Department of Agri- culture from IS52to 1905 foots up $4,447,402 08 and theestimaU ed annual value to day or a le of the varieties introduced by the Agricultural Department is far in excess of tlOO.UOU.UUU, These figures show thst the ex penditure of public money for seeds and plants for free distri bution among the farmers has been a most profftable invest- met, in the past.
